Excellent for students
By Z-12
This is a interesting, fun, and a slightly dark humorous look at financial institutions. If you have any need (as a student of some sort) to understand the nuts and bolts, who answers to who and to understand it as painlessly as possible - Read This Book - before you ever step into class. You will thank me. If you are just curious about finance - Read This Book. Text books on finance read like, well, textbooks. You Can suffer worse fates but why? I found it to be; 1) informative without boring me into a coma (that alone is worth the money), it was a "fun read" 2) written and segmented well - easy to pick up and get into quickly 3) notations that added texture and depth to the book. Two things you should know; 1) this is about London, not the U.S. (not that it matters much) the author does mention distinctions when he feels it relevant 2) my reading shifts roughly run about 30 - 45 minutes. --- If you get a chance to listen to this guy - Do It! Even if you don't read this his style will be worth your time. If he ever writes a murder mystery - Buy It!! The list of suspects (and their moral ambiguities) would make Niccol Machiavelli giggle.

What You should Know about the World of Investment Banking
By Paul Prifti
Ok, this is overdue, I should have posted this review way back when I posted it from the UK.
I read 'The Game: How the World of Finance Really Works' from the beginning to end. Carefully. Here's what I thought.
Two are the main achievements of this work. One, it takes a much talked and yet very little known about subject, the City, and presents it in a structured and realistic way. Two, it's an enjoyable read, which for a non-fiction work it's remarkable.
The work is divided into chapters, subchapters, sections and subsections. Examples are given in different font and separated from the main text. All this makes it easy to follow, keep track of the topics discussed and take the information in one step at the time. It's easy to come back to and keep on reading.
A typical working day in the City is explained with precision and in detail. The description of people who work in and run the City is colourful and at times harsh, almost cynical. It comes across more as a generalisation and a personal opinion of the author. However, it's interesting to read about the way the characters have been put together. I didn't take it that seriously. But then, it's important to keep in mind the fact the author is part of the world he's writing about and cannot be emotionally detached to it.
The language used is easy to follow most of the time. However, there are words such as echelons, opprobrium and others similar that don't make reading flow with ease. It's unlikely people in the City use such words in their everyday language. Also, sentences are at times a bit long which takes concentration to keep track of. Using simpler words and dividing long sentences into shorter ones would silence the harshest of critics and also apply to a larger audience.
'The Game' is a really good book. It's instructional and the author has put it together with the benefit of the reader in mind. I will read it again with pleasure.
