Thin, but useful

This little book is only 110 pages long, of which only 40 really concentrate on bow and arrow setup, tuning, and shooting; the rest is devoted to hunting, bow construction, and a bit of biographical info on Ferguson. And truthfully, it's not terribly well written. Ferguson's strength is as a bowman and teacher, not a writer. But those 40 pages contain a wealth of useful information distilled into almost everything the beginning barebow shooter needs to know.

More experienced bare bow archers may find a lot to disagree with here. For instance, Ferguson shoots only aluminum arrows, and thinks wood is just too variable and inconsistent. That alone will raise more than a few hackles. (Since this book was published, he's brought out his own line of carbon fiber arrows.) But even the most experienced archer will admit that there's a lot to be learned from an archer who can consistently place his shots the way Ferguson does day in and day out.

I have a few bones to pick with Ferguson over his conception of instinctive shooting. He claims that since people are very bad at a task requiring them to estimate distance in yards, it must therefore be impossible to shoot purely "instinctively." As anyone who has read Fred Asbell's books can tell you, that's a bit of a straw man argument. Instinctive shooters don't say to themselves. "Gee, that looks like about 27 yards..." any more than an outfielder thinks "that looks like about 30, maybe 35 yards" before throwing to second base. They just do it, relying on practice and instinct to throw the ball with a high enough trajectory to reach the baseman's glove. When Ferguson says the archer should "become the arrow," he's saying the archer has to internalize the the arrow's trajectory, just as the outfielder has to internalize the ball's trajectory. And obviously, that's exactly what proponents of instinctive archery a saying. In effect, Ferguson's technique is exactly the same as Asbell's or Sorrell's; he's just giving it a different name.

I'm returning to archery, having done a fair bit of recurve shooting with aluminum shafts and sights in the 1970s, and with a longbow and wooden shafts in the 1990s. I bought this book as a refresher in technique and tuning, and while thought I knew a fair bit about shooting barebow, I picked up more useful info from this book than I expected. I'd still recommend that the newcomer to barebow shooting start with G. Fred Asbell's Instinctive Shooting; Ferguson's book adds a different viewpoint, and a number of useful tips on tuning and shooting that complement the Asbell book.

A short but excellent book by the next Howard Hill

This book is a short and enjoyable read by a master that some would say is today's Howard Hill. Fellow Alabamian Byron Ferguson provides a clear description of his techniques of shooting the bare bow, as well as some excellent hunting tips. He relays a few good stories along the way.

The book is not very long, but Ferguson covers all necessary topics from equipment, technique, practice strategy, bow tuning, bow design, hunting equipment and hunting tips. in a few places, I would have liked just a bit more detail, and the black and white photos leave something to be desired. Those are the only reason I didn't give it the full 5 stars.

Must-read for traditional archery

I already owned the book. It was the first one I read on the subject of traditional archery, and it was and remains the foundation of my knowledge base for the sport. I think it would be helpful and a pleasure to read for anyone interested in traditional archery, at any level, so I purchased a copy from Amazon as a gift for a relative who was already versed in traditional archery. He has thoroughly enjoyed it. Of course, anyone familiar with the amazing Byron Ferguson would like this book. I haven't reached the point of becoming the arrow, and I don't know if I get that part, yet. Nevertheless, I highly recommend the book.

I have been a health and fitness enthusiast since around 1965. By 1974, I developed a strong interest in, and an aversion to aging. Sure, I was still young, fit and "invincible," but I saw my grandparents declining rapidly, and my parents, aunts and uncles were visibly aging and slowing down as well.

I figured if I could live to 100, medical technology would have figured out how to "cure" aging.
�
Fast forward to today, and it looks like my guess was uncanningly accurate... if not conservative. It may have been wishful thinking then, but now it's supported by many world-class researchers who are on the cutting-edge of emerging world-changing biomedical breakthroughs.
�
Going back to 1978, my invincibility turned out to be a bit overblown. I suffered a paralyzing spinal cord injury which turned my life upside down to say the least.
�
After a long period of readjustment, I realized just how fragile we meat bags are. We can be brought to our knees... or even terminated in a blink of an eye. Most are luckier than that. But we all eventually deteriorate over time, no matter how we try to stem the tide.

Smart, Strong and Sexy at 100 is not only extremely informative, but it all makes so much common sense.Just about everything in life requires a good, solid foundation and this book helps tremendously to create that kind of foundation on which we can then continue to build a healthy and happy future. Already being a so-called senior, I look forward to chatting with you folks fifty years from now with whatever technology. I highly recommend reading this book and starting to build that strong foundation.

Excellent research tool for ordinary people.

Smart,Strong and Sexy at 100 is an excellent contribution. IOt updates the reader on the current state of the sciences of Radical Life Extension extremely efficiently. Furthermore it explains those strategies that can be applied by the ordinary individual now. Kekich hammers home the principle that doing what will maximize quality of life in the present is virtually the same work that increases the probability of living longer...possibly much longer. David also provides excellent resource lists. Beautiful job David!

A concise, focused, practical guide to anti-aging

If more people were to follow David's advice on nutrition, exercise and supplements ALONE, they would not only dramatically improve their own health and longevity, but also save the country a whole lot of money in terms of reduced health costs and elderly care.
After reading years ago the "Fantastic Voyage..." by Ray Kurzweil and Terry Grossman (2004), and their followup book "Transcend, nine steps to living well forever" (2009), this book "Smart, Strong and Sexy at 100" by David Kekich, provides a much easier to read, concise, and practical guide to health and longevity that can be absorbed by anyone.
Check out David's Longevity Express Dietary Recommendations (p. 79), the Top Ten foods for Longer Life (p.88) and his Longevity Express supplement recommendations (p.122-142) to get a quick feel how solid this book is, then read it from cover to cover!

About the Author

Dr. Leslie Portney is the Director of Graduate Programs in Physical Therapy for the MGH Institute of Health Professions. Leslie graduated with a Doctor of Physical Therapy from the MGH Institute, a PhD in Gerontology from Boston University, a Master of Science in Physical Therapy from Medical College of Virginia, and a Certificate in Physical Therapy from the University of Pennsylvania. She is a licensed physical therapist in both New York and Massachusetts.� Leslie has authored a multitude of books and has contributed to a variety of different publications including the PT—Magazine of Physical Therapy.� Leslie is currently a member of the American Physical Therapy Association and on the Task Force on Uniform Outcomes Assessment.

If you have a rehabilitation background and need to understand statistics this is a great book. I bought this book as a supplement for my statistics class. It explains concepts so well! Our professor changed to this book the next year. All the OTs and PTs in my PhD program have bought this book. This is in my keep forever collection. Everyone in my department has the book and only loans it out with strict instructions for its return.

The poem, written in some 7,400 dactylic hexameters, is divided into six untitled books, and explores Epicurean physics through richly poetic language and metaphors. Lucretius presents the principles of atomism; the nature of the mind and soul; explanations of sensation and thought; the development of the world and its phenomena; and explains a variety of celestial and terrestrial phenomena. The universe described in the poem operates according to these physical principles, guided by fortuna, "chance," and not the divine intervention of the traditional Roman deities. Epicurus maintained that the unhappiness and degradation of humans arose largely from the dread which they entertained of the power of the deities, from terror of their wrath, which was supposed to be displayed by the misfortunes inflicted in this life, by the everlasting tortures that were the lot of the guilty in a future state, or where these feelings were not strongly developed, from a vague dread of gloom and misery after death. To remove these fears, and thus to establish tranquillity in the heart, was the purpose of his teaching. Thus the deities, whose existence he did not deny, lived forevermore in the enjoyment of absolute peace, strangers to all the passions, desires, and fears, which agitate the human heart, totally indifferent to the world and its inhabitants, unmoved alike by their virtues and their crimes. To prove this position he called upon the atomism of Democritus, by which he sought to demonstrate that the material universe was formed not by a Supreme Being, but by the mixing of elemental particles that had existed from all eternity governed by certain simple laws. The task undertaken by Lucretius was to clearly state and fully develop these views in an attractive form; his work being an attempt to show that everything in nature can be explained by natural laws without the need for the intervention of divine beings.

About the Author
Titus Lucretius Carus (c. 99 BC – c. 55 BC) was a Roman poet and philosopher. His only known work is the epic philosophical poem De rerum natura about the tenets and philosophy of Epicureanism, and which is usually translated into English as On the Nature of Things. Very little is known about Lucretius's life; the only certain fact is that he was either a friend or client of Gaius Memmius, to whom the poem was addressed and dedicated. The De rerum natura was a considerable influence on the Augustan poets, particularly Virgil (in his Aeneid and Georgics, and to a lesser extent on the Satires and Eclogues) of Horace. The work virtually disappeared during the Middle Ages, but was rediscovered in a monastery in Germany during 1417, by Poggio Bracciolini, and it played an important role both in the development of atomism (Lucretius was an important influence on Pierre Gassendi) and the efforts of various figures of the Enlightenment era to construct a new Christian humanism. The book The Swerve: How the World Became Modern (2011) by Stephen Greenblatt is a narrative of the discovery of the old Lucretius manuscript by Poggio.

Poetic philosophy

How incredible it is to read a poet and philosopher from 60 B.C. writing on the philosophical derivation of the idea that atoms must exist, that they have some spin on them, and that there is conservation of matter in nature! These thoughts about "atomism" would have been lost except for the fact that Lucretius presented them in a very good Latin poem. Although credit is given to Leucippus and Democritus for starting the idea of atomism, Epicurius and Lucretius were strong exponents of these ideas. The poem utilizes common observations to illustrate that the world about us is simply a combination of atoms and void. This had strong implications not only for the demise of the Roman and Greek gods and goddesses but also for how humans should live in the real world, and how they largely create their own misery. Lucretius loves life, looks straightly at it, speaks strongly against the fear of death, and promotes a rational calm life in which friendship is very important. The poetry is wonderful and powerful in itself. Two quotes (I,62 and I, 140) in the early part of the poem speak clearly to the modern reader: "When before our eyes man's life lay groveling, prostrate, crushed to dust under the burden of Religion (which thrust its head from heaven, its horrible face glowering over mankind born to die) one man, a Greek, was the first mortal who dared oppose his eyes, the first to stand firm in defiance. Not the fables of the gods, nor lightning, nor the menacing rumble of heaven could daunt him, but all the more they whetted his keen mind with longing to be first to smash open the tight-barred gates of Nature"..."And yet your virtue and the hoped-for pleasure of a delightful friendship urge me to persevere in my work, to watch through the calm nights, seeking choice words, the song by which at last I can open to your mind such dazzling light that you may see deep into hidden things." This is a great and astonishing poem, powerfully translated by Anthony Esolen. Lucretius did not conceive of the idea that parts of atoms, i.e. electrons, might spread rapidly through the body, so his poem gets more labored in Book III where he deals with the relationship between the body, mind, soul, and spirit. However he did think the soul had to be made up of the very smallest atoms that could pass quickly to all parts of the body. If the modern reader substitutes "electrons" where he mentions "atoms" in reference to the soul, then Lucretius is not far off the mark. The book has a 21 page introduction and 49 pages of notes at the end to help the reader understand the place of this poem in the history of ideas. It should be required reading for biological scientists and physicians.

About the Author
STEWART HAMILTON has been Professor of Accounting and Finance at IMD, Switzerland since 1981. A graduate of the University of Edinburgh, UK, he is a member of the Institutes of Chartered Accountants of Scotland, of Alberta and of Ontario. Formerly a senior partner of a UK national accounting firm, he has extensive consulting experience with a wide range of major European companies. He has contributed to many books and other publications and has written prize winning cases on the failures of Barings and Enron.

ALICIA MICKLETHWAIT is a Graduate of the University of Oxford, a member of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants and has an MBA from IMD. She has held accounting and commercial positions in industry and worked as a member of the acquisition and internal audit team of an American owned multinational. She co-wrote the prize winning case study of the collapse of Barings Bank.

This is one of the most important works of legal scholarship of the 20th century, standing on the cusp of the 21st. It transformed society's understanding of what had until that time seemed like simply a feature of life, part of "reality" about which there was nothing to be done. Mackinnon changed our lives by asserting that women had a right to redress, that sexual harassment was neither uncommon nor trivial and that women had a right to demand better. Those reviewers who dismiss it as poorly written, poorly reasoned or who attack the author personally must reckon with the fact that it was intrumental in creating a cause of action where one previously did not exist. They protest too much. This book is a must read.

A rant dressed up as legal theory, she leaps constantly from the subjective to the general. The most imporatnt character in this book is the author and, in a hundred different ways, she lets the reader know as much over and over again.
It's lucky that women's studies departments exist because, if her works in general and this one in particular were subjected to a (dare I say it?) less hysterical discipline, MacKinnon would be publishing her theories as hand-stapled screeds and distributing them on the subway.
Read Germaine Greer -- a feminist who makes all MacKinnon's basic points but doesn't leap to quite so many stretched conclusions. Greer also likes sex (or did once) while MacKinnon seems to regard the procreative act as foreplay for the real business of complaining about it later.
