Thought Provoking History of Chinese Missions
By ddgg
I enjoyed this book. The facts and figures are for China in 1866 and illustrate how big the need was for Christian missionaries. The comparison between the number of ministers in Great Britian and the huge need for missionaries in China was eye opening. There are stories about Hudson Taylor's travels in China and how primitive the situation was when he got there. (Many of these stories are the same as those in his autobioraphy.) The book also gives insight into what China was like 150 years ago. If you are interested in the China of the mid-1800's or in missions, I think you would enjoy this book.

Be aware that there are a lot of "typo's" in this book and sometimes whole passages are repeated.

Metamorphoses: A New Translation, by Ovid

"A version that has been long awaited, and likely to become the new standard."―Michael Dirda, Washington Post

Ovid's epic poem―whose theme of change has resonated throughout the ages―is one of the most important texts of Western imagination, an inspiration from Dante's times to the present day, when writers such as Salman Rushdie and Italo Calvino have found a living source in Ovid's work. Charles Martin combines a close fidelity to Ovid's text with verse that catches the speed and liveliness of the original. Martin's Metamorphoses will be the translation of choice for contemporary readers in English. This volume also includes endnotes and a glossary of people, places, and personifications.

Review
"Smoothly readable, accurate, charming, subtle yet clear.... A lucidly fluent version of this most flowing of poems."

This translation of the Metamorphoses is all that one could wish. --Richard Wilbur

Among the accomplished translations of Ovid in our day, this version of Metamorphoses by Charles Martin elegant, witty and exuberant by turns, and epic in its span from the creation of the world to the apotheosis of Julius Caesar should now lay claim to its own distinguished ground. --Robert Fagles

Charles Martin's new translation of the Metamorphoses, the latest in a 500-year-old tradition, both gives us an Ovid for our times and reminds us that in our times Ovid is everywhere.

[Martin] has caught Ovid's sly ironies, his un-Virgilian briskness, and his own kind of tough-minded pathos, and has created a completely convincing poetic voice. The translation is a marvel. --Rosanna Warren

I read right through this translation and so exhilarated was the handling of movement and metaphor throughout that when I finished I wanted to start over.... Charles Martin is to be congratulated for a singular achievement. --William Jay Smith

Ever since Horace Gregory published his translation of The Metamorphoses in 1958, it hasn't been bettered until now. Charles Martin's muscular version in blank verse is remarkably lively and modern, the Ovid for our time. --Robert Phillips

A great classic and great translation
By Taka
Ovid, or Publius Ovidius Naso, justly deserves his acclaim as one of the three canonical poets of Latin literature alongside Horace and Virgil. And he knows it and doesn't bother to hide it, as he appends this bit of encomium to himself at the very end:

My work is finished now: no wrath of Jove
nor sword nor fire nor futurity
is capable of laying waste to it.
...
wherever Roman governance extends
over the subject nations of the world,
my words will be upon the people's lips
and if there is truth in poets' prophesies [sic, Quandoque bonus dormitat Homerus, as the Romans would say]
then in my fame forever I will live.

So he is the worst kind of genius: a genius who knows he is a genius. Witty, elegant, and lively, his Metamorphoses is a masterpiece of epic poetry that tells of the myriad odd transformations that mythical (and sometimes historical) figures from Orpheus and Icarus to Romulus and Julius Caesar go through. Throughout, he is delightfully and cuttingly mocking of pretty much the entire epic tradition and every great poet that came before him, including no less authors than Virgil and Homer themselves. In at least three elaborate scenes, he makes so much fun of epic battles and they are hilariously and eerily reminiscent of Quentin Tarantino's comical massacre scene in his Kill Bill Vol. 1. Hell, Ovid can be tragic, comic, moving, and sarcastic/satirical all at the same time without lacking in elegance. The poem, 15 books of 1,000 lines per book, so seamlessly integrates story after story of wildly differing genres and plots and lengths that it feels like you're reading a single monomyth without getting bored or overwhelmed. In fact, befitting its title, the stories are constantly changing and sprouting out - each little story feeding into the next and each book spilling into the next without pauses - always keeping the reader on his toe and more often than not leaving the reader breathless and reeling.

Charles Martin did a superb job translating the work. He uses free verse in rendering Latin dactylic hexameter into iambic-friendly English, and it is really good. It's lively, swift, and above all, elegant - or in other words, as Ovid ought to be. Except in the scene where the Muses battle it out with the Pierides, a.k.a. P-Airides whose verse is rendered in modern rap, the translation had everything right and good (though even the surreal rap battle scene was not so bad - just weird). If you're looking to read Ovid, buy this edition. It apparently doesn't add anything new to the original (as many editions do, rather profusely and liberally and thus preposterously), faithful to the original, and very reader-friendly. In my opinion, it belongs to the best translations of the classics.

My Workshop Participants Love this Translation!
By Amy Barr
I teach mythology and literature in translation. In my mythology section I had my students read a version of Ovid available online. They found the experience painful and dull, even though they were somewhat familiar with the story line. So, when I assigned a translation for my workshop on Ovid, I chose this one on the strength of various reviews. Its a real pleasure to have a group of students become ecstatic about a piece of ancient literature! The Lukeion Project will now being using this translation as required reading.

Approachable and Engaging

I am teaching this with upper-level seniors. It's approachable, engaging, and fun. My students are enjoying this piece of literature more than imagined they might. I will definitely keep this in the line-up for a few years because of the feedback I'm getting from the students.

bread book comparison
By Amazon customer
I wanted a book that gave me not just recipes, but information on making bread. What makes a loaf firmer or softer? So I got a number of books from the library, and bought one book. Here is a comparison of them. I have NOT tried recipes from all of them, since at this point my main goal is information, not recipes (or 'formulas' as they like to call them).

Bread Science: The Chemistry and Craft of Making Bread, by Emily Buehler.
This is an independently published book; get it from Two Blue Books - it is more expensive used on Amazon than new direct from them. This book gives detailed coverage of bread making. There is a long chapter on the science of bread making that goes into more detail than you need, although it is interesting. You don't need to read that chapter; the rest of the book has enough information. And it is very good information on ingredients and processes. There are good diagrams on how to knead and how to shape. I found this useful and highly recommend this book.

The Bread Bible, by Rose Levy Beranbaum.
A big book with a lot of good information. This gives a lot of information on techniques, and includes useful information like expected ingredient ranges (water compared to flour). She covers equipment in depth, such as a comparison on mixing machines - and how to use each one. I am very pleased with this book, and highly recommend it. My understanding of how my actions impact the final bread have definitely improved with this and the Bread Science books. This is the book that finally turned the corner for me on how much kneading is required (more than I thought).

BakeWise: The Hows and Whys of Successful Baking with Over 200 Magnificent Recipes, by Shirley O. Corriher
This book only has a small chapter on making bread. It does give a decent overview, including the basics on shpaing, steaming, and such. But there certainly is not as much detail, and she does not emphasize flavor development the way some of the other books do. There are also no diagrams on how to knead or shape. Don't get this to be your primary book on making bread. Of course, there is a lot more in this book on other types of baking. The rest of the book chapters are called Cakes, Steam Leavened, Pies, and Cookies. There is some good information, but your cholesterol will suffer. She loves butter and cream, and makes no stab at making the recipes healthier. And I've never seen such a complicated brownie recipe before. I'm sure it's great. Just be aware what you are getting before you dive in to this book.

Local Breads: Sourdough and Whole-Grain Recipes from Europe's Best Artisan Bakers, by Daniel Leader
This book has information on ingredients, equipment, and techniques, including some diagrams, but the overview is higher level than in, say, The Bread Bible. Still, there is a lot of good information. The various sections include additional information and Q&A after some recipes. It seems to have a nice variety of recipes. Overall, this doesn't seem like a 1st choice for information but a good supplement book.

The Bread Baker's Apprentice: Mastering the Art of Extraordinary Bread, Peter Reinhart
Reinhart's books include a lot of story telling. This can be interesting, but certainly takes a lot of space. He includes his description of the required steps in the 2nd section of the book. There are some excellent pictures, such as the windowpane test. And there is a nice chart showing all the recipes and what techniques it uses, which is nice if you want to select a recipe that uses a biga, for example. He is a big advocate on slow rises and preferments, which most of these writers are. Personally, I prefer Beranbaum's book; I felt that book is better organized, has more information, and is a bit clearer. But this book is still a good choice, particularly if you prefer pictures to diagrams.

Peter Reinhart's Whole Grain Breads: New Techniques, Extraordinary Flavor, Peter Reinhart
Again, this has Reinhart's narrative style. His focus is, no surprise, whole grain breads. A lot of the basic information is repeated here, although in less detail than his Apprentice book. His recipes might initially strike you as very complicated. I made a 'spent grain bread'. It uses a soaker plus a biga, then makes the dough. However, it really was very straight forward and easy. So you might not want this as your only bread book, but it gives a lot of ideas for other breads.

With my new understanding on how to make bread, I expect I will be less dependent on pre-made recipes. That being said, having the recipes saves you from (failed) experiments and helps give new ideas. So for a good understanding, I recommend Beranbaum's "The Bread Bible" and Buehler's "Bread Science". I also might get Reinhart's "Whole Grain Breads" for a focus on those styles of bread.

This book is fantastic at going deep into what makes bread
By Ilyse

Wonderful book!
By another commenter
An embarrassing confession: For years, I made lackluster homemade bread. Sometimes it came out okay, but usually not so much. I'd try to adapt recipes that often came out poorly and I didn't understand why. Sometimes I'd bake a loaf that came out perfectly, with perfect texture and excellent flavor ... but I couldn't reproduce it, and the next time I tried the same recipe, it flopped.

After reading this book, I finally understand what's going on with my dough, and I have learned how to make a truly excellent loaf of bread! The author provides clear, well-illustrated explanations for what is happening at each step of the process, so that even a kitchen klutz like me can grasp the concepts. My breads have become consistent and much more predictable, because I finally understand what I need to do at each step and *WHY*.

Although there are a few recipes in this book, it is not a recipe book. It is a concept book which enables you to adapt your own recipes once you understand how bread works.

I strongly recommend this book to lackluster bakers like myself, and also to all homeschool moms. This sure looks like a great unit study to me!

I truly believe in miracles. I am a true testament of a collection of miracles. For those of you who are not a believer of God, I hope my story will bring you closer to believing the possibility of a divine creator. The belief that I had about God as a child carried me through life in what I would describe as a protective bubble. The negative, the unpleasant, the horrific seem to have no profound affect on me .It would not last long in my present. A goodness will come to my aid. I am forever grateful for this miracle. In my story you will recognize these miracles first hand. These miracles are helping me live a fulfilled life in which I help others along my journey. In the story you will see that I try to be a fair minded person but sometime the negativity of nature overwhelmed me and I had to strike .I try to be as merciful as possible. In the book you will see how the miracles in life shaped and guide me thru out my life today. I am no saint but I will do what is right most of the time. Hope you enjoy the book.

Freedom Evolves, by Daniel C. Dennett

Can there be freedom and free will in a deterministic world? Renowned philosopher Daniel Dennett emphatically answers “yes!” Using an array of provocative formulations, Dennett sets out to show how we alone among the animals have evolved minds that give us free will and morality. Weaving a richly detailed narrative, Dennett explains in a series of strikingly original
arguments—drawing upon evolutionary biology, cognitive neuroscience, economics, and philosophy—that far from being an enemy of traditional explorations of freedom, morality, and meaning, the evolutionary perspective can be an indispensable ally. In Freedom Evolves, Dennett seeks to place ethics on the foundation it deserves: a realistic, naturalistic, potentially unified vision of our place in nature.

From Publishers Weekly
"Trading in a supernatural soul for a natural soul-is this a fair bargain?" Dennett, seeking to fend off "caricatures of Darwinian thinking" that plague his philosophical camp, argues in this incendiary, brilliant, even dangerous book that it is. Picking up where he left off in Darwin's Dangerous Idea (a Pulitzer and National Book Award finalist), he zeroes in on free will, a sticking point to the opposing camp. Dennett calls his perspective "naturalism," a synthesis of philosophy and the natural sciences; his critics have called it determinism, reductionism, bioprophecy, Lamarckianism. Drawing on evolutionary biology, neuroscience, economic game theory, philosophy and Richard Dawkins's meme, the author argues that there is indeed such a thing as free will, but it "is not a preexisting feature of our existence, like the law of gravity." Dennett seeks to counter scientific caricature with precision, empiricism and philosophical outcomes derived from rigorous logic. This book comprises a kind of toolbox of intellectual exercises favoring cultural evolution, the idea that culture, morality and freedom are as much a result of evolution by natural selection as our physical and genetic attributes. Yet genetic determinism, he argues, does not imply inevitability, as his critics may claim, nor does it cancel out the soul. Rather, he says, it bolsters the ideals of morality and choice, and illustrates why those ideals must be nurtured and guarded. Dennett clearly relishes pushing other scientists' buttons. Though natural selection itself is still a subject of controversy, the author, director of the Center for Cognitive Studies at Tufts, most certainly is in the vanguard of the philosophy of science.

From Library Journal
The man who advanced our understanding of consciousness and evolution in books like Darwin's Dangerous Idea now addresses the issue of freedom.
Copyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
An aggressive writer certain of his positions (he titled an earlier book Consciousness Explained, 1991), philosopher Dennett here continues his quest to demolish metaphysical conceptions of human nature. Our cherished concept of free will is the subject of this work. It may relieve those delving into his dense Darwinian argumentation that Dennett decides that such an attribute of humanity does indeed exist, albeit as a product of aimless evolution. He builds up to his conclusion by first breaking down a definition of determinism, illustrated with references to atoms, Martin Luther, and a computer model of evolution. Dennett then upholds the principles of Darwinian algorithms, which endlessly iterated created robotlike cells and, ultimately, us. The latter topic will perk up general readers' interest, as Dennett advances the nitty-gritty of his view of free will by seeking out logical flaws in a no-free-will interpretation of neurological experiments, and by insisting on an evolutionary picture of altruism and responsibility. In a complex presentation, Dennett's essential points will be plain to the serious readership for this work. Gilbert Taylor

Darwinian determinism reconciled with a notion of free will
By J Scott Morrison
The first point to make about this book is that Daniel Dennett's ability to engage readers is well-nigh unprecedented in current scientific or philosophic writing. Reading him is like watching a lion-tamer whose daring keeps us, breathless, on the edge of our seats.
His basic effort is to reconcile the determinism of Darwinism with the humanist's concern with human freedom. To do so he jettisons the notion that free will is a metaphysical concept. Rather, he explains it in terms of contemporary objective science, specifically via the same sort of evolution that led to the development of the eye or of language. He relies heavily on Richard Dawkin's concept of the evolution of memes: ideas that compete with each other just as other characteristics do via natural selection. In other words he argues that freedom of will grows and evolves. To achieve this conclusion he makes the point that determinism (a cause mechanistically producing an effect) is not the same as inevitability. He uses an example from baseball (shades of the late Stephen Jay Gould!) to make his point. He says that a batter has a choice of turning away from a pitch that is going to hit him or allowing it to hit him, depending on which action will help his team. His action is not determined by the prior history of the universe, but by his own analysis in the moment. In a different game, he might make a different choice. This, and other similar arguments, lead Dennett to the conclusion that the more we know, the more varieties and degrees of freedom we can have. Thus, modern man has more freedom than did, say, the Neanderthal.
Essentially then, Dennett, whose earlier work in the areas of consciousness (another concept that gives determinists fits) are seminal, asserts that natural science is the ally of freedom, not an argument against it. The audacious arguments he posits to support this position are breathtaking in their scope and are, for this reader, convincing.

Is that all?
By Paul & Lynda
Daniel Dennett is attempting a thankless task, but one that is long overdue. Back in 1984, with the publication of Elbow Room, he sought to liberate free will - that perennial hobgoblin of philosophy - from a surplus of metaphysical baggage that is increasingly difficult to justify based on what we know about how brains work and how minds evolved. On these two topics, however, Elbow Room required the reader to reserve judgment. Since then, Dennett has given the world Consciousness Explained (1991), which, as the title implies, tries to tell us how brains work, and Darwin's Dangerous Idea (1995), which tries to explain how minds evolved, and in the process provides one of the most lucid accounts yet of the philosophical implications of Darwinism. Now, with Freedom Evolves, Dennett attempts to tie it all together.
The problem with this book, as far as I am concerned, is that it feels rushed and disjointed. I was more than happy to read all 500+ pages of DDI because the topic deserved that much space and, honestly, that book is a pleasure to read. The topic of free will, if anything, requires even more space to develop, and I would have gladly sat through six or seven hundred pages if necessary. As it is, my understanding of Dennett's arguments is sketchy - even after letting them sink in a few days and re-reading a few sections - so sketchy, in fact, that I won't attempt anything like a synopsis here, for fear of bungling the job. Beyond that, I was a little annoyed with the amount of recycled material from CE and DDI.
So why is Daniel Dennett's task a thankless one? Because he insists that free will is not an "illusion" as some hardcore materialists claim - nor is it some "extra something" in the sense implied by traditional dualist philosophers. There are a lot of feathers to ruffle in this area. Affirming free will on a strict materialist basis would be quite a feat, if done clearly and convincingly. I believe that case can be made, and that it should be made, and that Dennett is qualified to make it. Unfortunately, in Freedom Evolves he didn't do so as clearly and convincingly as I wish he had. Until Dennett or somebody else does so, the task will remain long overdue.

Important clarifying work on a central philosophical issue
By Todd I. Stark
Although this book doesn't introduce anything radically new for those who follow Dennett, it does clarify his previous ideas on consciousness, free will, and human nature, and this
is far from a trivial matter. For anyone seriously interested in the question of how human free will can possibly be compatible with physical laws of cause and effect, and thought that nothing else could be reasonably said on the matter, this book is an essential. It will indeed help you clarify your thoughts, which is afterall one of the best things a work of philosophy can do for you, and one all too rarely accomplished by most philosophers.
For those who wonder about the conditions that foster human freedom and those that suppress it, this book doesn't quite delve into political or social philosophy per se, but it is at least a start at a real answer by providing clear thoughts and useful science and meta-science.
One very good reason for this book is that while Dan Dennett is a clear and vivid writer, particularly for a philosopher, he is also frequently rather badly misunderstood for some reason.
He has been described by reviewers as denying that human beings have free will or conscious awareness, and he has been accused of being an "ultraDarwinist," although he himself disputes these claims. In Freedom Evolves, he ties his previous ideas together and presents them in a way that will resist these misinterpretations of his ideas.

First, Dennett defends the compatibilist tradition (where free will and determinism are considered compatible in principle). He believes that the universe is probably deterministic in its physical nature, but that this doesn't mean our lives are pre-determined, nor does it prevent us from having forms of freedom worth working and fighting for.
This is done by distinguishing determinism clearly from inevitability with the help of his perspective tool of
different 'stances.' The 'stances' help see causation in different terms: mechanical causes from a physical stance vs.
functional causes from a design stance vs. the action of intentional agents from an intentional stance. We perceive inevitability in causal models from the design stance. Then we get confused between free will and determinism because we apply inevitability back to the physical, where it simply doesn't happen.
Then he builds a non-Cartesian account of choice and agency. Rather than distinguishing mind from mechanicals,
he describes different kinds of agency arising as the result of different raw materials available at different times and places. He uses the "toy model" of Conrad's Game of Life as an intuition pump to show how the appearance of agency arises from Darwinian algorithms through patterns like anticipating and avoiding harm.
The fact that the game is implemented on a device that follows instructions to the letter makes it a tough sell I think, and not entirely convincing (something he is acutely aware of, but can't seem to do anything about).
The human kind of agency is introduced by a much clearer discussion of Libet's "half second delay" experiments than he provided in "Consciousness Explained." He makes the point much more directly here how the half second delay can reflect a distributed decision making process rather than demonstrating that "we" are not in charge of our own actions, as the interpretation sometimes goes.
He still follows the basic interpretation used by Tor Norretranders in "User Illusion" and Dan Wegner in
"Illusion of Free Will," (which he has a lot to say about, mostly very good). The fact that there is a reliable
readiness potential prior to reporting our decision to act does mean that in some sense "I" don't directly initiate my actions. But Dennett further shows how we are shrinking this "I" too far when we use this argument to claim that "we" aren't in control or that a mysterious unconscious mind is in control.
"We" are able to disavow responsibility for our own actions under these contrived conditions because we break in
to the middle of the distributed process of decision making. Libet's results demonstrate the separate operation of the parts comprising the whole process, and the flexibility of our sense of self, not the ultimate powerlessness of the "I". This discussion is a high point of the book.
In building a case for the power of the "I" to take responsibility and form committments, Dennett does a brief
review of the literature on evolutionary game theory and the role of committment problems in human social life. He then makes his most important and final argument, that the capacities evolved to solve these problems have become the basis, through cultural evolution, of a fragile and socially and culturally nurtured and exercised ability to internallize reasons for behavior through reflecting on them and communicating them.
The idea that freedom, in the sense used in Dennett's final argument, is so real and yet so fragile is seen in the
way it can be heavily influenced simply by what we believe about it. The metaphor of "bootstrapping" runs throughout
the book, having been introduced in terms of the children's story of Dumbo the elephant. In some sense, we actually rely on useful illusions, such as the 'magic feather' that boosts Dumbo's confidence enough for him to try to fly. A crow flies up to shatter the useful illusion by grabbing the feather away. Dennett refers back to our frequent attempts to "stop that crow !" at various points in the book, pointing out where we may possibly be building real qbilities on the scaffolding of useful illusions, and trying to determine where the scaffolding can potentially be taken down once the real ability is in place.

Terrific book
By Vijay Krishna
I have always been a fan of the Deitel series and have read quite a few books - C, C++ and Java How 2 Program as well as H.M. Deitel's book on OPerating Systems. I have little doubts in recommending this book to anyone starting C++.
So much to say about this book, however I'll limit myself to a few points which I found salient:
This book does not keep referring to C, so you won't get bugged down. (In case you want to learn C, try 'C How to Program' by the same authors.)
This book has been written keeping the beginner in mind (beginner = someone new to programming). So, it contains good, solid, perfect, working code you can try out.
Each page is littered with observations on Good Programming Practices and Software Engineering. That helps in refinement of code, so you need not buy another book to find out how to code 'effectively'.
The exercise questions are elaborate and will keep the reader busy for hours on end. But all that's time that's spent usefully.
And this book does not leave out those who already know C++. It's as good as any book for an intermediate level programmer.
An excellent book. Buy this one, it's certain that this will be the last C++ book you'll need.

Mediocre book with no improvements from 8th Edition - Will drain your enthusiasm
By Rae_Jr
This book suffers from all the shortcomings of the 8th edition. I was first planning on doing a detailed review, but came to realize I would be repeating exactly what many readers pointed out in the previous editions. Besides, the authors don't care much to read them. The prudent reader would do well to read the reviews of the 8th edition to have an idea of what to expect at C++ How to Program (8th Edition).

For the sake of completeness, I will point of a few things.

You are looking at the most expensive book on C++ ever written, with nothing magical to show for that $110+ price [edit: with the fall semester underway, the price is now $135+]. We know books marketed as textbooks are targeted towards students who allegedly have deep pockets (from grants, parents' savings, or loans), hence the $100+ price tag. Simply put, it says a lot that the authors take part in this robbery. In comparison, a reference such as The C++ Programming Language by Stroustrup costs $54; C++ Primer Plus, by Prata and Stephen is a meager $38, while Effective C++ by Scott Meyers sits at $35. Their content far exceeds the quality and breadth of Deitel (though they are not formatted as textbooks). Furthermore, to make the biggest profits, the Deitel series churns out new editions at $100+ every other year, so that students can't purchase used copies for cheap from their graduating friends (exercises will mismatch). These morally despicable plays on the price of this book itself justify 2 stars off.

The chief issue with this book though is the incoherent wordiness used. At the time of this review, the publisher has chosen not to enable Amazon's "Click to Look Inside" (draw your own conclusions). So I can't point you to live examples (I will update this once they do). C++ is not an easy language to learn, so random wordiness is your enemy.

As an example, imagine being explained the difference between declaring a pointer ptr1 as { const int * ptr1 } vs. using { int * const ptr1 }. Both declarations are valid, and optional, but the difference is critical and a life-saver. But to explain this, the authors do not bother with short and sweet examples. Instead, they roll out paragraphs of frustrating text. If somehow you make it through those explanations, by the time you get to heavy concepts such as 'base class virtual constructors', the STL best practices, etc., this book will have you gouging your eyes out. Now some subjects deserve 1000 pages, but jumping around with lengthy explanations does disservice. Programming explained right is beautiful.

In addition, the layout of the book is atrocious: the authors use pages of code to demonstrate simple concepts, even in the first part of the book. Why not keep examples short and compile-worthy? That way the reader can type them, see what matters, change things around, and see what breaks. Instead of that, the lines of code never finish, and the reader has little incentive to type it all out (which is so important). Even worse, later chapters refer to lengthy examples listings in previous chapters (warning to Kindle readers).

Again, the reviews of the previous editions stand, so check them out. This book is dangerous for beginners because it risks discouraging them. The table of content, coloring, and the first chapter of the book are attractive. But things quickly unravel. I never heard of a professional using this book as a reference, and for the beginner, notice how even the 5-star reviews encourage this being a supplement instead. I would give it 3 stars if the price wasn't a bad joke.

-=-= If you have some options in choosing a book, here are my recommendations below -=-=-=-

If you are a true beginner and have to start at C++, pick up C++ Primer Plus (6th Edition) (Developer's Library). I question the wisdom of using C++ as you very first programming language (see the first comment to this review below), but hey, maybe you don't have a choice: C++ Primer Plus should serve you well then.

If you know a good bit how to program, but need to get up to speed on C++, I recommend Sams Teach Yourself C++ in One Hour a Day (7th Edition). I usually hate the "Teach yourself X in Y hours" trick, but this author nails it. You will be going dilly-dolly until you finish the book, without needing too much motivation. This book needs more coding exercices for beginners though, so I wouldn't recommend it as a first programming book.

If you need a complete reference, I recommend the powerhouse The C++ Programming Language, 4th Edition. The author wrote the C++ language, and knows what he is talking about.

If you know C++, but would like to learn a few cool tricks, Effective C++: 55 Specific Ways to Improve Your Programs and Designs (3rd Edition) does the job quite well.

There might be more out there, but these gets my vote.

Comprehensive guide . Not the cheapest book out there but well worth it
By Lazarus
Unlike many C++ books, this seems to cover pretty much everything - from getting started through to the meat of C++ and also covering the Standard Template Library (STL). It is written in a somewhat didactic style with plenty of full examples, end of section summaries and tests (Q&A) to ensure the principles have hit home. Unlike many other C++ texts, it is clearly aimed at teaching from scratch, rather than 'starting from C'.

The format is great - color is used for section and for syntax highlighting which aids reading and comprehension.

There are a number of 'tips' scattered throughout the text highlighting frequent misunderstandings and programming pitfalls. The title is justified; the book teaches the fundamentals of C++ AND also how to program - hopefully how to write a good, well structured, easily maintainable C++ program.

The appendices are available in pdf only - a shame the entire book isn't also available that way also. I suspect the appendices were not included in the printed book to (understandably) save paper.

The one niggle with this is that it's a sizable tome already and in order to keep it below 'telephone book' size, it is printed on very thin paper (thinner than that in my bible). The thin paper causes the reverse side to be visible and also means that care is required not to tear the pages.

In all, this is an excellent book for both learning and reference. Highly recommended.
