Amazing Patristic Insight ...

This very easy to read book has very short but powerful snippets of the wisdom of St. John Chrysostom and the insight of the understanding of Christ by the early Church. St. John was a Church father back when Christianity did not have the numerous divisions that is seen today, and hence reading this book takes you back to that era. The book itself is divided on a daily reading basis, and each day's reading has an appropriate title that also makes the book useful as a reference. One of the most useful books in my library :)

Great Book for Advanced Undergrads, Grads and Professionals

I found this book by chance in the library in our company. I'd studied aerospace engineering and specialised in flight control about 7 years earlier, and this book was perfect for me. It provided a refresher of the basics, and was a good introduction to the more advanced concepts like LQR, H-infinity control, etc., as well as helping me dust off my Matlab skills. But it might not be the best book for newcomers to the subject - but it does complement other books (like Ogata, Stevens and Lewis) very well.

It's a really good text especially for the examples and integrated Matlab code. The language is extremely simple and the context will surely help you to understand the practice. The part about the pole placement design and optimal control is quite good.

In November of 1996, I was "hearing" a inner voice within me that, looking back now, was calling me to put away aimlessnes, mediocrity and an "average" existence, and to become a person of purpose and an achiever. I began answering that voice by purchasing this book.
Three years later, I can look back, satisfied that many negative attributes and influences I used to carry with me have been extirpated from my being. While I am nowhere near my final destination of the road to achievment, I'm simply a lot better than I was before.
There are an unlimited number of tools available for those who seek personal and professional development. Few, however, can match the works of Og Mandingo. But, rather than take my word for it, that is a discovery best made by yourself.

About the Author

Harry E. Allen is Professor Emeritus in the Justice Studies Department at San Jose State University. Before joining San Jose State University in 1978, he served as director of the Program for the Study of Crime and Delinquency at Ohio State University. Previously, he served as executive secretary of the Governor’s Task Force on Corrections for the State of Ohio after teaching at Florida State University in the Department of Criminology and Corrections.

Professor Allen is the author or coauthor of numerous articles, chapters in books, essays, and textbooks, including the first 10 editions of Corrections in America with Clifford E. Simonsen, the 11th edition with Drs. Simonsen and Edward J. Latessa, and the last three with Professor Latessa and Bruce S. Ponder. He also coauthored the first three editions of Corrections in the Community with Edward J. Latessa. He has been very active in professional associations and was the first criminologist to serve as president of both the American Society of Criminology (1982) and the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences (1994). He received the Herbert Block Award for service to the American Society of Criminology and the Founder’s Award for contributions to the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences. He is a fellow in both the Western and the American Society of Criminology and was the most frequently cited criminologist in the field of correctional textbooks. He was a Humana Scholar at the University of Louisville (2001) and for the past 14 years has been designing and instructing online courses for the University of Louisville in the areas of corrections, ethics, substance abuse, community corrections, terrorism, alternatives to incarceration, and capital punishment.

Edward J. Latessa received his Ph.D. from Ohio State University in 1979 and is a professor and director of the School of Criminal Justice at the University of Cincinnati. Dr. Latessa has published over 140 works in the area of criminal justice, corrections, and juvenile justice. He is coauthor of eight books, including Corrections in the Community and Corrections in America. Professor Latessa has directed over 150 funded research projects, including studies of day reporting centers, juvenile justice programs, drug courts, prison programs, intensive supervision programs, halfway houses, and drug programs. He and his staff have also assessed over 600 correctional programs throughout the United States, and he has provided assistance and workshops in over 45 states. Dr. Latessa served as president of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences (1989—1990). He has also received several awards, including the Marguerite Q. Warren and Ted B. Palmer Differential Intervention Award presented by the Division of Corrections and Sentencing of the American Society of Criminology (2010); the Outstanding Community Partner Award from the Arizona Department of Juvenile Corrections (2010); the Maud Booth Correctional Services Award in recognition of dedicated service and leadership presented by the Volunteers of America (2010); the Community Hero Award presented by Community Resources for Justice (2010); the Bruce Smith Award for outstanding contributions to criminal justice by the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences (2010); the George Beto Scholar, College of Criminal Justice, Sam Houston State University (2009); the Mark Hatfield Award for Contributions in public policy research by the Hatfield School of Government at Portland State University (2008); the Outstanding Achievement Award by the National Juvenile Justice Court Services Association (2007); the August Vollmer Award from the American Society of Criminology (2004); the Simon Dinitz Criminal Justice Research Award from the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction (2002); the Margaret Mead Award for dedicated service to the causes of social justice and humanitarian advancement by the International Community Corrections Association (2001); the Peter P. Lejins Award for Research from the American Correctional Association (1999); the ACJS Fellow Award (1998); the ACJS Founders Award (1992); and the Simon Dinitz Award by the Ohio Community Corrections Organization. In 2013, he was identified as one of the most innovative people in criminal justice by a national survey conducted by the Center for Court Innovation in partnership with the Bureau of Justice Assistance and the U.S. Department of Justice. He has been married to his beautiful wife, Sally, for over 35 years and has four wonderful children, all of whom grew up too fast.

Bruce S. Ponder�grew up in part on the raj of the Maharaja of Dharbhanaga and in Europe. He was a professional race car driver in the 1970s, winning major competitions including the “12 Hours of Sebring” (1972). He was formally trained in political science, computer information systems, and computer sciences. He also studied terrorism extensively and team-taught in-service training programs at the Southern Police Institute. Currently,he is Internet coordinator/online course developer and team instructor in a variety of courses at the Justice Administration Department at the University of Louisville, particularly in terrorism, intelligence and homeland security, and corrections.

Corrections in America is a very good book for those who are in the Criminal Justice ...

The textbook, Corrections in America is a very good book for those who are in the Criminal Justice field, especially ones that want to have a career in the prison or jail system. I was assigned this book for my Corrections in America class. We haven’t really delved into this book a whole lot, we really have only hit some of the basic and main points in it. Corrections in America isn’t one of those textbooks where you have to evaluate every word and sentence and in between every word and sentence, it is very general, basic and very easy to read and use. This book really gives a very good and simple overview of the prison system.

As a Criminal Justice student we learn all the aspects of the Criminal Justice system including corrections, corrections plays a major role in our system. Corrections in America breaks down the Corrections system and how it works. It gives you the history of corrections along with correction policies that are used today. It also includes the issues that come along with corrections and what has been done to better the system of Corrections. Corrections in America is a great textbook for anyone to get the general ideas, goals, and a good understanding of the prison system and how it works.

Corrections in America doesn’t only apply to students wanting to have a career in the jail or prison system, it is good for any student in the Criminal Justice field. As I mentioned, prison, jail, and corrections plays a major role in Criminal Justice. Without corrections, Criminal Justice would and could not function properly as it has such a vital role and impact. Having this book would be great for anyone in the Criminal Justice field because Corrections in America gives you everything you would ever want to know about the Corrections system without overwhelming you.

Since Corrections in America doesn’t overwhelm you with big words and loads of information you can’t understand like most textbooks it is easy to read, follow along with, and take notes. Corrections in America even highlights and explains vocabulary words in the margin so that you can easily point them out and know what they are, I never like when textbooks only highlight the vocabulary words in the text, but don’t give you an explanation in the margin. Corrections in America even takes it to the next level of easy and highlights the words in the text too, so not only does it give you the explanation in the margin, but it highlights the word in the text, so that you can easily find where the word is in the text.

Errors Galore.

The book itself featured some valuable content, I am required to read it for my degree program--so I may be biased. The problem is this: As students we are paying large sums of money for a book written by Phd's that contains several blatant errors. (Pg. 228, is one example). I am expected to edit my work extensively before submitting it, why can't Pearson get an editor? I just read Eragon--which is written by a 15 year old-- and I saw no blatant errors whatsoever. Fascinating! So, if there are errors in language usage is there a casual indifference to the information within? Only being an undergraduate student I couldn't say, I'm not experienced enough to detect falsehoods in factual content....but with the carelessness in other areas I would say it's a possibility.

There seems to be little question that the handful of men who became wealthy and powerful after the demise of the Soviet Union were greedy to the point of being criminal. Matthew Brzezinski's Casino Moscow, Chystia Freeland's Sale of the Century: Russia's Wild Ride from Communism to Capitalism, and Paul Klebnikov's Godfather of the Kremlin: Boris Berezovsky and the Looting of Russia do a good job of documenting the chicanery. What shaped the character of the so-called oligarchs? How did the decaying Soviet system influence such a diverse group of men? Hoffman, former Moscow bureau chief for the Washington Post, digs into the background of the six main oligarchs e.g., Boris Berezovsky of the All Russian Automobile Alliance (AVVA), one of Vladimir Putin's main backers, and Anatoly Chubias, former chair of Gazprom and founder of NTV (Novoe Televidenie, or "New Television") identifying the events that made each of them so predatory and so influential. Several characteristics are common to each. They all lived restless lives. They began to take advantage of the decaying system by starting capitalist ventures called "co-ops." About the Author
David E. Hoffman is a contributing editor at the Washington Post. He covered the White House during the presidencies of Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush, and was subsequently diplomatic correspondent and Jerusalem correspondent. From 1995 to 2001, he served as Moscow bureau chief, and later as foreign editor and assistant managing editor for foreign news. He is the author of The Dead Hand, for which he won the Pulitzer Prize for general nonfiction.

THE SIX MOST CUNNING AND RUTHLESS MEN IN THE WORLD

This book traces the rise and in some cases the demise of six of the most cunning and ruthless men the world has experienced in recent times. These men became known as the Russian Oligarchs. They carried out the biggest heist in history but not without the assistance of powerful western money interests and the proponents of laissez-fire capitalism such as some of the major international banks, Wall Street’s richest partnerships, the JP Morgan Bank, Goldman Sachs and well known capitalist adventurers such as George Soros.
The Oligarchs manipulated the new capitalist system that had been established upon the death throes of the centralised command economy in the Soviet Union. They ruthlessly accumulated massive wealth by grabbing Russia’s biggest factories, oil companies and mines.
The author has done a masterful job in revealing the rise of the Oligarchs who shrouded their activities in secrecy as they plundered the Russian estate. The Oligarchs were regarded as the sons of Yeltsin’s unruly capitalism. Yeltsin was a proponent of economic shock therapy with the aim of totally destroying Soviet Communism. He set out to put the enormous industrial wealth of the country into private hands. The Oligarchs utilised Yeltsin’s ambitions to their own enormous advantage. They became members of Yeltsin’s inner circle and manipulated by all available means the massive fire sale of Russia’s state assets to their own advantage. The Oligarchs bankrolled the seriously ill Yeltsin’s election campaign to ensure his hold on power during his dying days in power. They controlled the media and were able to manipulate Yeltsin’s public appearances to disguise his state of health. But at his end Yeltsin had to concede that privatisation had been exploited by the rapacious Oligarchs. Too late, he asked in his farewell speech for the forgiveness of the Russian people.
The Oligarchs were instrumental in Putin’s rise from obscurity as a means for their own advancement through the continued exploitation of the privatised state assets. To achieve their declared objective of maintaining the continuity of power after Yeltsin the Oligarchs found their preferred successor in Putin and manipulated his election to power. Putin was destined to clash with the Oligarchs because his personal ideology retained many aspects of the old soviet approach to power. Putin believed that everything had to be governed from above and it was therefore necessary for him to concentrate power, to control the mass media and to rule business. Inevitably Putin soon fell out with the key Oligarchs which meant that the days of glory for the Oligarchs were rapidly drawing to a close. New players were coming, new fortunes were being made and a new Russian leader sat in the Kremlin.
Putin had thwarted and betrayed the Oligarchs. He said to the Oligarchs- you were the ones who asked me to be president so how can you complain? The Oligarchs had no answer. Their days of prominence had ended.
But large parts of the huge fortunes the Oligarchs and their cohorts had amassed had been salted away to safe havens around the world. Their fall from grace in Russia would curtail their activities in their homeland but would not drastically impact on their wealthy lifestyles. Putin exacted punishment on those of the Oligarchs who resisted him and most are now exiled from Russia and have slipped entirely from public view.

A Must Read to Understand How Russia Collapsed

This is the most comprehensive explanation of how the Russian economy transformed itself from primarily state owned to largely privately owned during the Gorbachev and Yeltsen eras. The reader will find how these Oligarchs were able to acquire state owned industry for pennies on the dollar when no one would have thought it was possible. It is a story not generally understood by most Americans but is essential to understanding the subsequent Putin control of government. Extremely well written and rich in detail, I found Hoffman's writing style admirable. I only wish he would do a second book starting with Putin.

A different kind of book, focusing upon the rise of post-Soviet RussiaThis book

This book focuses very detailed information, time and effort into tracking the oligarchs that with colossal luck and courage , rise to incredible wealth by being in the right place at the right time with the right connections. Just when the author focuses too much detail on a person he has the ability to show the "big picture" again. This is 500 pages of serious reading but I really liked how he tied it into the rise of Putin at the end. It is a quality book worth 4 stars although I would not classify it as a likable book. In the end I learned a lot about the new Russia and therefore it was worth the time and money.
