Yes, the THIRD PRINTING is now complete! In addition to the already 30 pages added in the second printing, there's lots of new material in the third edition. Again, this is not your classic Bible Prophecy book - not in any way, shape or form. It is a chronological accounting of the first order--presenting overwhelming evidence that if man's days, as both Hebrew and Christian scholarship maintain, are 6,000 years from the creation of Adam, then time's up, big time! The reader will be introduced to "SIGNS" not only in an astronomical fashion but "signs" or monuments on the Earth, especially the Neolithic Earth will demonstrate that the Bible's extensive dimensional measurements of objects like Noah's Ark, the Ark of the Covenant, the Tabernacle in the Wilderness, the temples of Solomon and Ezekiel, and those of John's New Jerusalem are ALL inter-related. Proof positive on these numerical revelations will convince the reader that these ancient objects are not the works of the Annunaki, the Nephilim, "extraterrestrials" or slave laborers - no, the Great Pyramid of Giza was custom designed by those enlightened by the Creator of the Universe and are not the work of "fallen angelic beings" nor hybrids, giants or "men of renown" (aka demigods)! They who built Noah's Ark incorporated measurements from the Ark which reflect the very dimensions of Paradise. Krieger, who co-authored the recent blockbuster, THE FINAL BABYLON, will not bore the reader--although the math and geometry is dizzying at times; however, over 100 graphics break up any monotony. Notwithstanding, this text is NOT meant to be an easy read...you'll have to go back into the text to do further research on its multifaceted pages which reveal up-to-date biblical chronologies providing how close we are to the "end of time" - and how these ancient monuments upon the Earth are reflected in their biblical counterparts, and all leading up to the New Jerusalem. Magnesia/Atlantis vs. the New Jerusalem/Babylon the Great - history's "tale of two cities" is seen in Plato's world and in SIGNS - these amazing disclosures will bedazzle the reader to press on into the Passion Week/Holy Week of Jesus - from His Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday unto Resurrection Easter Morning - His Final Week. His week is "The Testimony of Jesus" - the author superimposes the Seventieth Week of Daniel over the Passion Week with some astounding results ... will the Church, will Israel, "endure" in testimony and experience the Final Passion Week? Numbers, numbers, numbers - connecting the dots - this read is one for the books and one that will provoke the "prophetic community" and, as well, Jewish, New Age, and virtually all branches of Christendom to rethink the Bible in terms of the "Dimensions of Paradise" as reflected in the "earthly view" of the same, Ezekiel's Holy District and Ezekiel's heavenly counterpart, John's New Jerusalem descending out of heaven to the earth - in Krieger's thinking the two have joined as one - the New Jerusalem is BOTH a Pyramid and a Cube - multidimensional! So, if you love math, you'll salivate over this text - and if you love timelines, you will find this tome beyond exciting. This volume is truly outside the "prophetic norm" - it is loaded with footnotes that the reader will find wholly supplemental to the topic at hand. Over 100 charts and graphics will give proof positive that there truly is a Designer of the universe whose timing is impeccable. We are living at the most incredible time in human history - you're about to read what they won't tell you in Church or in Synagogue. The Bible's Feast Days are intensely prophetic in their application. Jesus' 3.5 years of ministry culminate in His final week and that week, the "Testimony of Jesus" - according to Krieger - will be lived out in Daniel's Seventieth Week at the "end of the age." You won't be able to put the book down. David Flynn, Dr. John Michell and even Nostradamus - all would delight in its pages!

This book is "ATOMIC"! A massive work by Doug Krieger-Pastors and Preachers will not understand it!
By thedocofrock
This book is "ATOMIC"! A massive work by Doug Krieger, I was awestruck and amazed at the content! I read his previous work "The Final Babylon-America and the coming of the Anti Christ" a few months ago-it was "rock solid"! Krieger has cracked the code of embedded mathematics contained within the scriptures of our Bible. Once you understand the "cubit "of ancient measurement (i.e. the unit of measurement of Noah's ark and the writing on the wall of Daniel) is equivalent to 25.2 inches, it is like a key that unlocks many other prophetic mathematics. How in the world Krieger figured this out is beyond me. I have heard he is a retired mathematics professor. Maybe it is his prior experience of crunching the numbers in the classroom that has enabled him see number sets in the Bible that so many have missed for so long. Regardless, he seems to be on the something.
This book is not for the timid or faint hearted, though. It is heavy in mathematics, but the beauty of numbers is that they are not subject to interpretation. 1 + 1 = 2, no matter how you say it and Krieger proves his points over and over with pure mathematics taken from the scriptures. If you are looking for a "warm fuzzy story" with a happy ending, you won't understand this book. If you are looking for the diameter of the Sun, Moon, and the Earth, hidden in plain sight and need something amazing to share with a friend (and even your pastor/preacher) that will knock their socks off, this book will equip you!
If you are looking for something to really "freak out" your pastor/ preacher, this book might be for you. To be sure, few people on Earth today realize the book they have been carrying around all their life, (the Bible) is actually full of proofs and "watermarks" of authenticity, provided by the author and creator of all time and space. Read this book slowly and jot down notes and make marks in it's margins, it will be a great reference book for any student of the Bible!

Needs a Stronger Biblical Foundation
By William Struse
Signs in the Heavens and on the Earth is one of those books which challenges conventional thinking and takes the reader on a fascinating journey through the Biblical record and ancient history. Though I disagree with many of the authors conclusions there are several subjects he addressed with which I agree.

Mr. Krieger's information on the 25 inch "Hebrew Sacred Cubit" was fascinating. Sir Isaac Newton also wrote on this subject in his `A Dissertation upon the Sacred Cubit of the Jews and the Cubits of the several Nations'. Anyone interested in origins of the Hebrew Cubits would be well served by both books.

Those who find the subject of the Great Pyramid and its possible connections to the Biblical record of interest, will find ample material in this book for further consideration. Mr. Krieger offers a unique perspective on the subject.

To some, one of the most controversial aspects of this book will be the authors discussion of America in Bible prophecy. Frankly it's a subject which too few have the courage to address or even consider. Agree or disagree its takes guts to take the position he has. I think he may just be proven correct in his assertions on this subject.

* * *
There are two foundational premises Mr. Krieger puts forth in this book related to his chronological studies which I find myself in respectful disagreement. First is the authors use of a so called "prophetic year" and second is his interpretation of Daniel 9 and the 70 "weeks" prophecy. In this book these two subjects are inseparable and indispensible to a conclusion which Mr. Krieger makes in Chapter 7. I quote:

"Second Coming of Messiah will take place 30-days beyond the close of the 6,000 years in 2025 A.D....precise date given in detail several paragraphs below."

The date setting aspect of this statement aside, Mr. Krieger's claim is no small conclusion and as such its foundational premises should be spelled out so that the reader can ascertain if in fact there is any basis for his statement.

A major part of the foundation premise for this date is the authors reliance on a 360 "prophetic year". This "year" is based upon a statement in Genesis which mentions 150 days in five months. Mr. Krieger like many other authors on the subject extrapolates 12 of these 30 days months from the statement of Genesis. Further they assume that Noah unlike his Egyptian contemporaries did not intercalate the 5 missing days. Such a calendar without intercalation would have wandered much like the lunar calendar of the Islam today.

From the Exodus onward YHWH ensured that Israel's calendar was linked to the solar/agricultural cycle. YHWH commanded them to celebrate their first month in the month of the "abib". Abib in a Biblical context was the specific state of ripeness of barley. By fixing the lunar cycle to the growing cycle of barely YHWH made a De facto intercalation of the Israel's religious calendar. In practical terms this required a 13th month every 2 or 3 years. Evidence for such a month is found in the book of Ezekiel.

Regarding Daniel 9 and the 70 weeks prophecy Mr. Krieger bases his interpretation on a premise which cannot be proven with a reasonable rendering of the 2nd temple era chronology. Besides the assumption regarding a "prophetic year" the author assumes that Ezra and Nehemiah were contemporaries of Artaxerxes Longimanus. A close examination of the Biblical record shows that Ezra and Nehemiah lived during the reign of Darius "the great" Artaxerxes.

In summary I found some real good information in Mr. Kriegers book but his lack of building a solid Biblical basis for his "prophetic year" and his interpretation of Daniel 9 leaves his major premise without a definable Scriptural foundation.

I was fortunate to be a proof reader and contributor in small ways to this excellent scholarly research by Doug Krieger
By Gary Winkelman
"We are now peering into the final week of human history, commencing on Passover, March 30, 2018 and the Seventieth Week of Daniel." Simply stated on page 349.

And -- we all know who is coming back -- seven (7) years later in 2025. Are you ready?

This is a profound statement that the entire world needs to come to terms with -- quickly. Krieger is clearly in the savant category with his abilities -- like Daniel -- to interpret "the handwriting on the wall" -- a mathematical computation of universal proportions. Krieger backs it up with facts -- not opinions. Let the peer review begin!

Moreover, David Flynn and Rabbi Judah ben Samuel came to the same conclusions -- completely unaware of each other's eschatological research. There are far greater signs in the Heavens and on the Earth -- far exceeding the current interest in the Tetrad Blood Red Moons on Jewish Festivals in 2014 -2015. Buy this book and prepare.

Forgotten Faces: A Window Into Our Immigrant Past (Forgotten Faces - America's Lost History), by Ronald William Horne, Lisa Montanarelli

Forgotten Faces - A Window Into Our Immigrant Past reveals, for the first time, lost American history encapsulated in a beautiful but neglected art form. Forgotten Faces is the first book to explore memorial portraiture as a distinctive art form and acknowledge its contribution to our country’s valued history. In doing so, it reveals a never-before-published photo-panorama of American immigration at the turn of the twentieth century.

Forgotten Faces presents a first-ever collection of over 350 well-preserved photo-ceramic memorial portraits. The beginning of a series titled, Forgotten Faces – America’s Lost History, it demonstrates how a similarly beautiful collection of memorial portraits awaits discovery and exhibition from every major city in the United States.

Photo-Ceramic memorial portraits are photographs of the deceased mounted directly on their tombstones. They are made of ceramics the quality of the finest china but made to last outdoors for centuries. This edition now includes 10 pages of color plates - including rare images of immigrants from 28 different nations. It includes examples from Colma, California’s historic Holy Cross and Italian cemeteries as well as other U.S. and European locations.

Forgotten Faces details the technology, history and cultural influence of memorial portraits as both art and artifact. Forgotten Faces alerts readers to the fact these treasured artifacts are vanishing from our heritage and recommends methods for documenting them before they disappear.

From the Publisher
America possesses stunningly beautiful art that it does not even know exits. Resting quietly in the in the fields of its ancestors, America contains an enormous cache of valuable historical artifacts overlooked and neglected by historians for almost a hundred years. Yet this precious art and valuable artifacts are disappearing from our culture’s legacy before we even know it is there.

Forgotten Faces is the first book to explore photo-ceramic portraits on tombstones. It is the first book to present a stunning collection of this art and demonstrate its inherent beauty and value. It is the first book to tell our country about the continued loss of these priceless relics. It is the first book to explore this art form in depth and instruct us how to document and preserve this vanishing heritage for future generations.

Ron Horne’s work is a compelling call to action for historians and artists to rescue an art form long neglected and misunderstood. His beautifully photographed collection demonstrates the engaging appeal of this art. His words tell us how and why we need to act now save what still remains. The chapters contributed by Lisa Montanarelli detail the history and cultural influence of this art form and adds valued insights to understanding the considerable contribution it makes to our society. Read Forgotten Faces today and discover these "Rembrandts in America’s Attic". Join the effort to preserve the thousands that still exist across every city in our nation.

From the Author
It has always been about the faces in the photographs. I believe these portraits represent remarkable works of art. I consider them compelling and valuable supplements to our history. They show us unheralded immigrants trying to forge new lives in a new nation, not cultural icons or embellished historical legends. There is value in that. These surviving photographs of our ancestors deserve recognition, preservation and protection.

I urge amateur and professional photographers throughout the United States to explore their cemeteries and capture the essence of these forgotten faces. I appeal to historians to help recover this hidden heritage. I encourage gravestone enthusiasts, who are the real experts and true guardians of the art, to document them and organize their findings.

Yet, more people vandalize these relics than preserve them. The first in the series Forgotten Faces – America’s Lost Art, other editions from the cities of Chicago, New York. Boston, Atlanta and many more will follow. Together they will represent an entirely original photo-history of America’s immigrants at the turn of the 20th century.

If you experience the faces of these portraits as so many do, reaching across the partition of time and coming alive in the minds eye, then this book will fulfill its objective, to acknowledge these portals to the past as valued art and artifacts

A Unique Glimpse Into Past Lives
By David R. Smith
Forgotten Faces offers a surprisingly detailed look into our history. The text is easily read. Although the portraits are the heart of the book, the author's descriptions and insights enliven the images.

I was impressed by the breadth of knowledge about the portraits. Questions I had while reading were often answered in a following chapter. The book is a pleasantly thorough treatment of a little known area of our history.

This book has left me with a new outlook on memorials in general and with a hope that around the country further research into these memorial portraits will be undertaken.

California immigrant history brought to life!
By D. Donovan, Editor/Sr. Reviewer
Galleys and unfinished titles typically aren't mentioned here but keep an eye out for the finished version of FORGOTTEN FACES: A WINDOW NTO OUR IMMIGRANT PAST: it's a unique coverage of photo-ceramic memorial grave portraits and provides an outstanding survey of memorial portraiture as its own art form. This could have been mentioned under our art review section but is featured here for its important cultural insights as well: California immigrant history comes to life in an outstanding visual and written survey of a unique art and memorial form which should not be missed.

Bible Faith Study Course
By Funso Afolayan
An incredible book, engrossing, entertaining, and inspiring; one that is very difficult to put down. I bought my copy nearly twenty years ago. I have read it many times and I am still reading it. Without exaggerating, and apart from the Bible itself, I doubt if there is any other book that makes the subject of faith so clear, so real, and so practical. It is also a delight to read; Brother Hagin teaches serious spiritual stuff with humor and grace. Whatever your needs are, and whatever you are believing God for, whether for healing, annointing, prosperity, success in life and ministry, this is the book to read. Rev. Hagin shows there is nothing "mysterious" "unknowable", "unfathomable" about faith. Here is faith made simple. The entire book is based on two verses of the scripture: Mark 11:23-24. These two verses are also the cornerstone of the Kenneth Hagin Ministries. This is not a theory book; it is a testimonial to over fifty years of faith ministry that has brought salvation, healings and deliverances from all kinds of sicknesses and bondages to countless numbers of people all over the world. If you still have any doubt that Jesus still heals and delivers today just as he did in Bible days 2000 years ago, go and get this book, and do not drop it until you finish it, many times. If you are a child of God, walking diligently in the light of God's word, healing and the miraculous life belong to you too; don't let the enemy cheat you of your birthright. If you understand and follow all the principles enunciated in this book, you will wake up one morning and discover that whatever the impossible problem, or incurable sickness that you are dealing with has simply disappeared to be seen no more forever. I have tried it; it has worked for me again and again.

The best Study on Faith in the World!
By M. Dennis
I bought this book a month ago and it has blessed me tremendously!! Kenneth Hagin breaks down the different kinds of faith, what faith is, and how to apply your own faith. He also tells his own personal story about being healed from his death bed and many other experiences he had in the church, such as helping fellow Christians with their own faith. I love that there are questions after every lesson. This helps me to remember and understand what I have been taught in the lesson. I love reading Kenneth Hagin books because he speaks the truth about God. You will surely be blessed by this book and many other Kenneth Hagin books. This is a must read for anyone who is born-again, have weak faith, or for any Christian or anyone else who wants to have a relationship with God!!

Great Idea-Terrible Execution
By Marco Antonio Abarca
Having recently finished Mary Pope Osbourne subperb five volume retelling of the Odyssey, I wanted to reinforce some of the best stories for my five year old son. I thought this book in the "Grpahic Green Myths and Legends" series would be the best way to do this. Unfortunately, the quality of the illustrations in this volume are so amateur as to border on the laughable. This is a really ugly book. Avoid it at all costs.

From Library Journal
Surveying nearly 700 books and videos (including some of his own materials in both formats) published since 1987, Hinson (piano, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary) has created a unique and valuable tool for teachers, students, performers, and library materials selectors interested in current developments in piano literature. Though some of the works described (with critical annotations) are widely available in libraries, many that probably should be are not. All titles included are currently in print; a handy list of sources will aid in acquiring some of the more obscure materials. Good indexes sort the materials by subject (lists of piano music, biographies, aesthetics, pedagogy, etc.). Recommended for most academic music collections.?James E. Ross, WLN, Seattle, WA

Disappointed
By Ray Kasprzak
This book may contain some useful information but it is so poorly structured it's extremely tedious if not nearly impossible to dig it out. It is organized alphabetically by author rather than topic. There are cross indexes at the back of the book but they fail to give page numbers. Definitely recommend against purchasing.

Disappointing
By Claus Hetting
Even though this book sounded promising, it was in the end very disappointing. There are a few problems. Firstly, the references are organized poorly, I would like to have seen listings under for example 'piano technique', 'interpretation', 'biographies','piano history', etc. Instead it is just one very long alphabetical list with some limited cross-references at the end that are not practical to use. Secondly, a lot of references are to quite obscure. Finally, there is no advice at all, it is purely a listing, and thus no value is added by the author. I think the idea of the book is excellent, but it needs revamping!

By Aaron Aldergroves
I bought this story for my two year old son, who loves to cuddle. The illustrations are lovely. The writing is reasonably good, and definitely kept my son's attention (though, I found the word choices/sentence structure not very natural. It wasn't bad, but it was just a little "off" to me).

But, I have to say, this is the first story that has ever made my son cry. He wanted to read it over and over before bed, each time getting a little more distraught about the mother leopard leaving. After the fourth time reading it, he burst out in hysterical sobbing. My husband and I had to hug and snuggle him for at least 10 minutes until he was back to normal.

I don't know if I should hide this book so he never sees it again, or try reading it once more when he's calm. But, it really did not seem to help AT ALL with his fears of Mommy leaving. If your child is going through attachment issues, you might want to wait until he/she is over it until introducing this book!

My first daughter loved this book from when she was a baby and still loves it to this day. She is now 4. My 6 month old baby loves when I read this book to her. It is her favorite. She laughs and giggles when I read it. I have tried reading other books to her but I don't get the same reaction I get with this one.

My 10 month old loves this book and wants to read it every night. He has a ton of other books but seems to always choose this book. I think because the illustrations are very vibrant and he loves all my different voices for each animal.

Born Standing Up: A Comic's Life, by Steve Martin

In the midseventies, Steve Martin exploded onto the comedy scene. By 1978 he was the biggest concert draw in the history of stand-up. In 1981 he quit forever. This book is, in his own words, the story of "why I did stand-up and why I walked away."

Emmy and Grammy Award winner, author of the acclaimed New York Times bestsellers Shopgirl and The Pleasure of My Company, and a regular contributor to The New Yorker, Martin has always been awriter. His memoir of his years in stand-up is candid, spectacularly amusing, and beautifully written.

At age ten Martin started his career at Disneyland, selling guidebooks in the newly opened theme park. In the decade that followed, he worked in the Disney magic shop and the Bird Cage Theatre at Knott's Berry Farm, performing his first magic/comedy act a dozen times a week. The story of these years, during which he practiced and honed his craft, is moving and revelatory. The dedication to excellence and innovation is formed at an astonishingly early age and never wavers or wanes.

Martin illuminates the sacrifice, discipline, and originality that made him an icon and informs his work to this day. To be this good, to perform so frequently, was isolating and lonely. It took Martin decades to reconnect with his parents and sister, and he tells that story with great tenderness. Martin also paints a portrait of his times -- the era of free love and protests against the war in Vietnam, the heady irreverence of The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour in the late sixties, and the transformative new voice of Saturday Night Live in the seventies.

Throughout the text, Martin has placed photographs, many never seen before. Born Standing Up is a superb testament to the sheer tenacity, focus, and daring of one of the greatest and most iconoclastic comedians of all time.

Amazon.com Review
At age 10, Steve Martin got a job selling guidebooks at the newly opened Disneyland. In the decade that followed, he worked in Disney's magic shop, print shop, and theater, and developed his own magic/comedy act. By age 20, studying poetry and philosophy on the side, he was performing a dozen times a week, most often at the Disney rival, Knott's Berry Farm. Obsession is a substitute for talent, he has said, and Steve Martin's focus and daring--his sheer tenacity--are truly stunning. He writes about making the very tough decision to sacrifice everything not original in his act, and about lucking into a job writing for The Smothers Brothers Show. He writes about mentors, girlfriends, his complex relationship with his parents and sister, and about some of his great peers in comedy--Dan Ackroyd, Lorne Michaels, Carl Reiner, Johnny Carson. He writes about fear, anxiety and loneliness. And he writes about how he figured out what worked on stage.

This book is a memoir, but it is also an illuminating guidebook to stand-up from one of our two or three greatest comedians. Though Martin is reticent about his personal life, he is also stunningly deft, and manages to give readers a feeling of intimacy and candor. Illustrated throughout with black and white photographs collected by Martin, this book is instantly compelling visually and a spectacularly good read.

Three Bonus Deleted Passages from Steve Martin's Born Standing Up

On Returning to Disneyland
Ten years later, after the Beatles, drugs, and Vietnam had changed the entire tenor of American life, I returned to the magic shop at Disneyland and stood as a stranger. As I looked around the eerily familiar room another first came over me, a previously unknown emotion, one that was to have a curious force over me for the rest my life: the longing tug of nostalgia. Looking at the counter where I pitched Svengali Decks and the Incredible Shrinking Die, I was awash with the recollection of indelible nights where the sky was blown open by fireworks and big band sounds drifted through trees strung with fairy lights. I remembered my youth, when every moment was crisply present, when heartbreak and joy replaced each other quickly, fully and without trauma. Even now when I visit Disneyland, I am steeped in melancholy, because a corporation has preserved my nostalgia impeccably. Every nail and screw is the same, and Disneyland looks as new now as it did then. The paint is fresh, and the only wear allowed is faux. In fact, only I have changed. In the dream-like world of childhood memories, so often vague and imprecise, Disneyland remains for me not only vivid in memory, but vivid in fact.

On Meeting Diane Hall
During the day, I attended Santa Ana Junior College, taking drama classes and pursuing an unexpected interest in English poetry from Donne to Eliot. I would occasionally assist on a college stage production--never appearing in one--as a member of the crew. Years later I was looking through a box of memorabilia and noticed a silk-screened playbill of the musical Carousel, May, 1964, which listed me as a stagehand. The lead actress was Diane Hall. Something connected and I remembered that Diane Keaton's name was once Hall, (hence, Annie Hall). I confirmed with her that she was in that production. Neither of us remembers meeting the other, yet we must have worked in proximity. More evidence that I was a wallflower. Decades later, we ended up "making love" on the floor of a movie set on Father of the Bride.

On the Kennedy Assassination
One Friday in 1963, I had finished a class and was about to drive to Knott's Berry Farm for the afternoon shows when I saw a clump of agitated students across the campus. I asked someone what was going on. "They're saying that the president's been shot."

I drove across town to Knott's and punched radio buttons. I could hear the scheduled programs clicking off and being replaced by live broadcasts. Assassination seemed so ancient and inconceivable, I was sure that someone would soon correct the erroneous report. President Kennedy died that day and I didn't know that news could be taken so personally by a nation. Sitting backstage, watching the Birdcage's black-and-white TV drone out the increasingly grave report, we were all mute. We assumed the performance that night would be canceled, but as show time neared, word came down that we were going on. We couldn't fathom why; we believed no one would show up, much less enjoy us. I still can't explain the psychology, why the very full house that night was able to roar with laughter. The obvious must be correct: our silly show was providing some kind of balm that soothed the ache.

In 2003 I hosted the Oscars on the particular weekend that the United States invaded Iraq. The news was grim and just hours before the show I flipped on the TV and saw a report, subsequently proven false, that our captive soldiers were being beheaded. I quickly turned the TV off, sick. I knew, from my experience forty years earlier with the Kennedy assassination, what my job was, and I harbored a secret knowledge that the audience would laugh. I also felt that soldiers who might be watching would be tuning in to see the Oscars and all its hoopla, not a cheerless comedian doing what he doesn’t do best. I decided to acknowledge the circumstances early in the show and then get on with the jokes. The academy had announced that the show would "cut back on the glitz." I walked out for the opening monologue, took a look around the stage at the dazzling, swirling staircases, mirrored curtains and polished floor, and simply said, "I'm glad they cut back on the glitz." It got a laugh of relief and the show could go on.

Pure Drivel
Praise for Born Standing Up
"[A] lean, incisive new book about the trajectory of [Martin's] life in comedy...Born Standing Up does a sharp-witted job of breaking down the step-by-step process that brought Steve Martin from Disneyland, where he spent his version of a Dickensian childhood as a schoolboy employee, to both the pinnacle of stardom and the brink of disaster...tightly focused...Born Standing Up is a surprising book: smart, serious, heartfelt and confessional without being maudlin." --Janet Maslin, The New York Times

"Absolutely magnificent. One of the best books about comedy and being a comedian ever written." --Jerry Seinfeld, GQ

"The writing is evocative, unflinching and cool. When Martin takes a scalpel to his life, what you feel is the precision of the surgeon more than the primal scream of the unanaesthetized patient...Born Standing Up is neither fanfare nor confession. It gives off a vibe of rigorous honesty. With lots of laughs." --Richard Corliss, Time Magazine

"A spare, unexpectedly resonant remembrance of things past…Martin's one true subject is the evolution of his comedy--the transcendent moments...A smart, gentlemanly, modest book…winning." --Jeff Giles, Entertainment Weekly, EW Pick: A

"A charming memoir tracking what the great comic characterizes as his 'war years.' Martin offers an eloquent and exacting account... [and] approaches his subjects with generosity, warmth and integrity." --Kirkus Reviews

"Sure to delight fans and create new ones." --Laura Mathews, Good Housekeeping

"What fun to discover the humble beginnings of some of his iconic personas...inspiring." --Rachel Rosenblit, Elle

"The archetypical story of the underdog's rise and a particularly American story...beautifully written, honest, engaging, and quietly brave." --Frederic Tuten, Bomb Magazine

"Son, you have an ob-leek sense of humor." --Elvis Presley

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Neatly combining his personal and professional worlds, beloved comedian, filmmaker, author, magician and banjoist Martin (Pure Drivel) chronicles his life as a gifted young comedian in this evocative, heartfelt memoir, which proves less wild and crazy than wise and considerate-though no less funny for it. The typically reticent performer shares rarely disclosed memories of childhood-his father, a failed actor, harbored increasing anger toward his son through the years-and the anxiety attacks that plagued him for some two decades, along with his early success as a television comedy writer, first for The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, and the evolution of his stand-up routine. Sharp insight accompanies stories of his first adult gig (at an empty San Francisco coffee house), his pioneering "no punch lines" style ("My goal was to make the audience laugh but leave them unable to describe what it was that had made them laugh"), appearances on programs like The Steve Allen Show and breakthrough moments with small, confused audiences. Though vivid and entertaining throughout, Martin doesn't dish any behind-the-scenes dirt from Saturday Night Live or The Tonight Show; rather, he's warm and generous toward everyone in his life, including girlfriends and colleagues. Tellingly, this intimate early career recap ends not with Martin's decision to give up live performance or his film debut The Jerk, but with a visit to his parents and Knott's Berry Bird Cage Farm, where he first performed as a teenager.

It’s hard to believe that it’s been a quarter century since Steve Martin packed the props and walked away from a stunningly successful turn in stand-up. His career as a popular actor, a critically lauded writer (Shopgirl), and a dramatist has since flourished, of course. But readers hoping for vintage Martin can get a quick fix with Born Standing Up. While the memoir may not be as salacious as fans expect or as riotously funny as an arrow through the head, Martin writes with the wisdom of experience (don’t miss a remarkable meeting with Elvis Presley after a 1971 show) as he recounts his development into one of the most popular and original comedians of his generation.Copyright © 2004 Phillips & Nelson Media, Inc.

Not A Hollywood Tell-All But Rather A Sneak Peek Into The Hard Work Roller Coaster of a Professional Comedian
By Drevik
I bought the audio version with the e-version and it felt as if he walk speaking specifically to me. It gave it a much more intimate feel. I highly recommend the professional reading addition.

The book itself is a collections of stand-up memories and developmental notes on how Mr. Martin began his professional career as an onstage performer. It goes through a bit of the highs and low without going for the cheap "tell all" trash of sex, drugs, and back room deals that seems more like a low class ploy to sell books. What little there is of that in the book is quickly and quietly glossed over. He speaks of his career and gives his nuances on how he moved from an unknown to having more fame and less privacy. The professional reading is also punctuated with mini banjo solos.

He does not go much into his movies beyond "The Jerk." Most of his private life is still very much private, although he does go a bit into his relationship with his immediate family. There is not a lot of mentions of other famous people beyond a few tiny mentions here and there. It really is merely focusing on career development without throwing any of his past coworker under the proverbial bus.

For me, he came off as a hard-working professional with a lonely somewhat secluded life that makes me want to reach out and be his friend. However at the same time, it made me know that since his fame that he has erected a wall between his public persona and his private life. I do not see him as capable to have a friendship with the "common" folk anymore, as he will always be unable to trust anyone without expecting ulterior motive, which is a shame.

Not a barrel of laugh, monkeys, etc.
By Stepan Spoonwalla
It's kind of depressing, actually. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing; who was it that explained that most good comedy comes not from light-hearted people, but is a weapon aimed at the powerful rather than a tool to amuse them; to "comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable" ?

Martin's book brings the dark, but not so much the anger; more sadness. What he does a pretty good job of is showing that, while he landed by an accident of birth in a charmed place and time, he was plagued with the same dysfunctional family relationships as people whose lives are less charmed.

But what I found the most interesting is that he's somewhat candid about the conceit behind his most-lucrative period of "new comedy" -- that it was aimed at creating the impression that you had to be smart to understand it, that something important was being said that you needed desperately to be a part of, something that the yapping masses wanted to"be hip to," and that you didn't dare let on that you didn't find it funny for fear of letting people know how uncool you truly were. You had to get the inside joke, or pretend you did, to avoid being mocked. And in that sense, his comedy was actually a microcosm of much of the culture of the seventies, (and '80s) specifically -- phoniness, full-blown artifice. That's what Madison Avenue, when it co-opted the hippie culture, created; it morphed the sixties' culture into its polar opposite while retaining the superficial trappings.

Wonderful!

One of the best autobiographies I've read. Though seemingly a shorter read than some, every word is woven into an intensely interesting, honest and heart warming story. With a self-made and brilliant career as a back-drop, Martin entices the reader into his life and takes you along for the ride. His revelations about his relationship with his parents will bring you to tears as well. I remember his famous phrases from his comedy routines being repeated at work. His and Dan Ackroyd's Czech "wild and crazy" guys skit is one SNL's funniest of all time. You will enjoy this book immensely and will read it in record time.
