About the Author
Erika Hoff is professor of psychology at Florida Atlantic University. She has taught language development to undergraduate students at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside and, since 1996, at Florida Atlantic University. Dr. Hoff holds an M.S. in psychology from Rutgers-The State University of New Jersey (1976) and a Ph.D. in psychology from University of Michigan (1981). She conducts research on the process of language development in both typically developing children and children with language impairment, and has received funding for this research from the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, and the Spencer Foundation. She has published her research in Child Development, Developmental Psychology, First Language, The Journal of Applied Psycholinguistics, The Journal of Child Language, and the Merrill-Palmer Quarterly. Dr. Hoff has contributed chapters to LINGUISTIC DISORDERS AND PATHOLOGIES: AN INTERNATIONAL HANDBOOK (1993), THE HANDBOOK OF PARENTING, (2002), THE HANDBOOK OF PSYCHOLOGY, and the MIT ENCYCLOPEDIA OF COMMUNICATION DISORDERS.

Great introductory textbook for students or laypeople interested in language development

This book is written to be very accessible to it's readers - most books and articles that I read about language development are complex and require a lot of jargon to understand; this book clarifies that jargon and uses more accessible terminology to describe common theoretical constructs, as well as a detailed background in the theoretical arguments occurring in the field today.

This book is a comprehensive overview of the various areas of study in language development, which caters well to the diversity of interests and background knowledge of an undergraduate class.

Much improved from 4th Edition

I like this book. The glossary terms are at the back of the chapters for some reason, but they do have page numbers next to them which is very helpful. There are some changes in the editions, so don't get the fourth edition if your teacher has the fifth edition. You need the new edition if that's what the syllabus requires. It's a pretty good book that goes into detail and has lots and lots of research studies listed in it. Pretty easy to understand. Overall, a good pick for a language development class.

Great book

Read the entire book, and answered all the questions in all 11 chapters. Learned a lot about language acquisition. Worth the $190 spent... but I will be reselling it back to amazon for $150 since I don't need the book anymore. :)

Almost, but not entirely, unlike Douglas Adams.

I really wanted to like this - a satisfying and less downbeat ending to the hitchhiker books is certainly called for, since the original series ends extremely depressingly. And I don't think Adams intended to leave it like that.

Colfer occasionally, but not nearly often enough, captures some of the absurdity of the series, but never got the idea that the Hitchhiker's books (and in fact all of the late Douglas Adams' outstanding books) weren't so much science fiction, as a satire of literally everything, while loosely wearing a science fiction costume. This book fails to work on just about every level. In brief, avoid.

I was very disappointed. The writer seemed to have read maybe 5% ...

I really didn't want to believe the other reviews of this book. I thought, "well, at least it would be seeing the old characters again". However, I was very disappointed. The writer seemed to have read maybe 5% of Douglas Adams' original stories and cobbled together this. There are very annoying things about the book, but it completely lacks the author's wit or even storytelling. Sorry to say, I'm not a fan of this. I had to go back and re-read the originals to get the bad taste out of my mouth.

If you are expecting to step back into the hitchhiker's guide world as so beautifully created by Douglas Adams then this book is not for you. Go back and reread the series again, you will find something new each time. However, with this book you are getting a sad attempt at trying to copy his humor which at its best is difficult to get comfortable with and seems a bit patronizing and at its worst reads like fanfiction. Save your money and read everything else by adams, the genius is gone and there is no recreating him but his work still entertains and inspires.

About the Author
Bent Flyvbjerg is Founding Chair of Major Programme Management at Oxford University's Saïd Business School and Director of the Oxford Centre for Major Programme Management. Previously, he was Professor in the Department of Planning and Development at Aalborg University. He is the author of the highly successful Making Social Science Matter (Cambridge, 2001) and Rationality and Power (1998).

Nils Bruzelius is Associate Professor at Stockholm University and an independent consultant on transport and planning.

Werner Rothengatter is Head of the Institute of Economic Policy Research and of the Unit on Transport and Communication at the University of Karlsruhe, Germany. He is also the president of the World Congress on Transport Research Society (WCTRS).

A really interesting read about the finance of large projects

Megaprojects and Risk: An Anatomy of Ambition (2003) by Bent Flyvbjerg is a dry but interesting look at how expensive projects are chronically over budget, under utilised and delivered late.

The book gives the strong impression that the big budget government and private projects like the Channel Tunnel, the Øresund Bridge and many rail projects are chronically misrepresented in financial modelling that precedes them.

Flyvberg and his team have analysed many big public infrastructure projects and have found that 9 out 10 cost more than planned, 9 out of 10 are late and 9 out of 10 are not utilised as much as projected. Roads projects, are, however, quite often used more than expected It’s a terrible record. The record of rail projects is the worst, Average traffic on rail projects was 61% of the forecast level and sometimes as low as 25%.

After looking at these projects the authors found that those involved in making plans had lots of pressure put on them to cook forecasts. Essentially the promoters of the projects are dishonest and are either after political gain or are set to build the project and personally benefit with the risk generally taken up by taxpayers.

The book suggests a framework for better assessment with a range of forecasts made and investigation of how close the forecasts are to what happens after the fact. They also suggest that private money be solicited and made to take some of the risk. If it can’t be obtained it is a good suggestion that the project was not really viable.

It could be argued that the projects that are not viable but that are huge achievements should be undertaken anyway. This is a legitimate point. However, deception in the initial phases should still be reduced as much as possible. Part of the problem is described by the authors as being that projects are sometimes chosen on the basis of who has the most dishonest figures.

It’s a really interesting book that anyone who believes in infrastructure deficits and that more public spending in infrastructure is required should definitely read.

Zero Management Skills On Public Projects

Coupled with the political bent on these megaprojects provides an atmosphere which is likely to continue with the terrible results we see. Worst case ever was the H3 freeway on Oahu; something like 17 or 18 times the original estimate. With so much history you would think the process should have improved. Now what was that Einstein adage about doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. If we had operated this way during the height of the space race, we wouldn't have had enough money in the USA to pay the bill. For shame!!!

Steve Wohlberg is the speaker/director of White Horse Media and hosts the Sword of the Spirit television series. The author of 23 books, he has been a guest on over 500 radio and television shows. He has spoken by invitation inside the Pentagon and U.S. Senate, and has also been featured in the History Channel documentary, Nostradamus Effect: The Armageddon Battle Plan. He lives in Priest River, Idaho, with his wife, Kristin, and their two children.

Steve Wohlberg did a fair job with the writng of this topic, but I think he could have done better. There were some good points but we must really look at the dangers in this new craze and how it will affect your spiritual life and your walk with the Lord. Again there seems to be a profit motive as the book was somewhat expensive and the reading was enough for a one night sitting. While counseling at the local jail; a lady asked me about the Twilight series, especially what I thought about the dangers that this can have on the youth and adults of today. Simply put; we need to keep our focus on the Lord and stay away from those things that can rob us of the spiritual blessings. If we do what is right; we don't have time to do what is wrong. I believe that the Twilight series is more hazardous to your spiritual life as well as your health. Walk with Jesus and have a JESUS filled day.

Oh please...

This book is a joke. So what if it all is true and Twilight makes kids interested in Wicca and magic. So many ignorant people are afraid of Wicca because they think it's devil worship...please. If they took the time to actually try and understand it, they'd see that all REAL Wicca is is a communication with nature. So what if it's Pagan? It's not hurting anyone. Stuff like this book just makes me disgusted with people.

Thank God that Steve Wohlberg has given us this information on this occult film. It is clear that God has directed him in what he has written. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to know the truth about many of the occultic movies that are ensnaring our young and impressionable children.

Great story

I love dachshunds and interesting architecture so this was perfect for me. I had really never read much about this house; now I would love to go there. The book is advanced for my granddaughter (3)and I think I enjoyed it more than she did. She did enjoy all the things the doxies did. I enjoyed reading more about the history of the house.

I bought this for my 8 year old granddaughter who wants to be an architect. This is a cute story and so informative. She loves Frank Lloyd Wright so needless to say, it's one of her favorites. Her first love is Iggy Peck, the Arcitect.

This is a story about the Franklin Llyod Wright's home "Fallingwater". It's a great book about his architectural style, and how it was created for the owners and their 7 dachshunds. In 1964, the house became a museum open to the public. The proceeds of this book go directly to preserving Fallingwater and supporting its education programs. Definitely more suited to older primary grades.

This is the best book I came across under 500 pages

I loved the way this book is organized and layed out. The diagrams are easy to read and follow. The slant of the book focuses on the communication aspects of electronics starting off with a definition of communications and explaining and surprisingly clear detail the definitions you will come across. A good refresher chapter covers Ohm's Law, transistor and FETs configurations and a real good section on couplings and their effects on the signal. Diagrams of the spectum analyzer's screen is used to explain modulation with out getting technical. All the math is basic algebra with no calculus in sight. There's a page in chapter 4 that helps you in designing common emitter amplifiers. AM, FM, sideband is covered including standing wave ratio and antenna theory. I wish I had this book when I was learning radio communications in the military. It's only 200 pages but the information provided is enough to get the beginning student up to speed quickly. The author doen't go much into TV but he does cover various line connections from waveguides to coaxial cables. From here you can easily move on to an ARRL Radio book. I love this book!!!
