OKAY FOR WHAT IT WAS

A bit ambivalent about this series and I read the lot but can't find the follow-on set, 6-9.

I knew what to expect when I got the books - the author spelled out quite clearly that this is erotica - so I have no complaints about that. However, I did think the premise was unbelievable - investigators are not THAT clumsy - and the sex went on for so long and for so many pages that I got bored.

I do think the author could have encapsulated the whole story in the 1-5 volumes as the pace didn't pick up until the last section in the 6-9. There was so much sex in it for so long (yes, I know it was erotica) that I lost the plot and got confused about who did what to whom and when at the last. The pace could have been much faster and the background information and dangerous aspect built into a good mystery, but still keeping to the erotica theme.

It was okay but too long.

Not a believable story line and the heroine was rather weird. I would not read this again....can't believe I even finished it. He was really meanspirited and manipulative. She just took it all from him and eventually liked the abuse he dished out.

Not a page turner but still nicely paced. Everything occurs in less than 72 hours. No buildup. I like the tension. I enjoy the drama. I just want writers to be counselled on their use of time. Given time this author has potential.

A wonderful book!

As a therapist who is new to the Gestalt, I have found this text to be a wonderful introduction into the philosophical underpinnings of Gestalt. Dr. Crocker is a philosopher by training, and she writes with a clear philosopher's hand - using language precisely, defining terms and using metaphor to help the reader understand complex phenomena. As a trained therapist, she also provides some good clinical case examples to illuminate her discussion.
If you like philosophy, and are interested in Gestalt therapy, I would recommend this book. If you are interested in phenomenology, I would also recommend this book.
I believe that this book is one that I will re-read in the future, and each re-reading will help me understand Gestalt at a deeper level.

In the nineteenth century, access to novel forms of entertainment, such as the circus, and newspapers, which offered a new language of representation and criticism, wrought fundamental changes in theatrical, musical, and choreographic practices. Musical drama disseminated print literature to largely illiterate audiences starting in the 1870s, and spoken drama in the 1920s became a vehicle for exploring social issues. Twentieth-century institutions―including night fairs, the recording industry, schools, itinerant theatre, churches, cabarets, round-the-world cruises, and amusement parks―generated new ways of making, consuming, and comprehending the performing arts. Concerned over the loss of tradition and "Eastern" values, elites codified folk arts, established cultural preservation associations, and experimented in modern stagings of ancient stories. Urban nationalists excavated the past and amalgamated ethnic cultures in dramatic productions that imagined the Indonesian nation. The Japanese occupation (1942–1945) was brief but significant in cultural impact: plays, songs, and dances promoting anti-imperialism, Asian values, and war-time austerity measures were created by Indonesian intellectuals and artists in collaboration with Japanese and Korean civilian and military personnel. Artists were registered, playscripts censored, training programs developed, and a Cultural Center established.

Based on more than two decades of archival study in Indonesia, Europe, and the United States, this richly detailed, meticulously researched book demonstrates that traditional and modern artistic forms were created and conceived, that is "invented," in tandem. Intended as a general historical introduction to the performing arts in Indonesia, it will be of great interest to students and scholars of Indonesian performance, Asian traditions and modernities, global arts and culture, and local heritage.

Refreshingly Realistic

Looking for a job can be rough and discouraging, and when you tack actually getting hired onto that, it can start to feel impossible. Just getting an interview is an enormous accomplishment, and if the job doesn't pan out, you chalk it up as practice and try again. In my search for guidance, I have read a slew of books and articles that offer up a wide range of advice, a lot of which has turned out to be vague, oversimplified, and completely useless.

Happily, this book was different. I like the author's tone, which is humorous and straightforward. His advice is very encouraging for people who don't have a lot of professional experience, especially because it feels like you can't get your foot in the door without it. I can't tell you how many articles I've read that amount to, 'just be the best graphic designer ever and you'll have no problem finding a job.' If that was already the case, I probably wouldn't be reading this, and since it's not, what should I do? Well, there is no magic formula, and he's very clear on the fact that it takes a lot of hard work and persistence to get hired, but he doesn't just leave it at that. He provides a sensible strategy that is challenging, but doable.

Little Book, Lots of Ideas

Bought this book after reading Drew's excellent Know Your Onions - Graphic Design: How to Think Like a Creative, Act like a Businessman and Design Like a God, hoping to gain a bit more insight into making my work more marketable.

The book itself is a very short read, with only 25 or so sections (most one page of text per spread). They outline the basics of what can help you stand out from the crowd. I wished for a bit more in terms of written content, or maybe some visual examples to coincide with each point. In the end though, this is an action book. You'll get the most out of it by applying the concepts listed within. It provides a nice checklist of sorts for people looking to beef up their work in that regard. I also enjoyed the personal touch of the handwritten note and little cards, stickers, and other included doodads.

Lost one star primarily due to the price/page ratio; for 5 dollars more you can get a bigger bang for your buck out of de Soto's other books. The pound/dollar conversion may have played into this a bit.

I wasn't expecting the book to be as small as it was, partly due to overlooking the dimensions. Maybe the inclusion of a "banana for scale" shot in the product images is worth looking into. Unfortunately, I have no bananas at this time to provide an image myself.

In the end, I would recommend this book over taking a class on portfolio prep. It provides you with a more organic approach to presenting work (provided you put the work in), allowing your creative side to shine.

Perfect booklet!!

Just received this book shipped direct from writer and love it! It's a tiny booklet which i will carry with me in my bag and study.
