The Life and Death of Lenin, by Robert Payne

Who was Vladimir Ilyich Lenin?

He was a man with vast potential for good and evil.

He was one of the twentieth century’s political geniuses.

He was the revolutionary leader who envisioned backward, feudal Russia as the world’s first socialist country.

He bent Karl Marx’s theories into a weapon for conquering state power, and built the Bolshevik Party into an efficient political machine capable of leading the workers and seizing power.

He held the Russian Revolution together through a bloody civil war, and yet he lived to see the betrayal of his ideals by the rise of Stalin.

As much as any leader, his ideas and personality shaped the 20th century.

‘Mr Payne’s book on Lenin is an impressive work and as interesting as it is impressive’ - Bertrand Russell

‘Splendid character study of a human dynamo’ - The Scotsman

‘a powerful delineation of the man and revolutionary leader … Mr. Payne highlight with a sure touch the main line of Lenin’s drive to power, selecting the significant details of speech, gesture and daily life that bring the man and his intimates to life. The Life and Death of Lenin will clarify both the political and human realities of the Soviet revolution and of communism’ - Philip E. Mosely, Saturday Review

‘to this large-scale study [Mr. Payne] has given his full measure of devotion … [with his] ability to pace a vast, detailed narrative; political sense; an unforced feeling for drama; a firm conception of the central character; and control over an English style that always both fluent and sharply edged … Not only do we watch the unlocking of the vaults of [Lenin’s] character, but we are also enabled to follow the development of the single revolutionary idea that dominated him.’ - Clifton Fadiman, Book-of-the-Month-Club News

‘All the talents of Edgar Allan Poe, Alfred Hitchcock and Charles Addams couldn’t produce a more chilling tale’ - Associated Press

Robert Payne (1911-1983) had over a hundred books published on a wide range of subjects during his lifetime. Critics raved about ‘his vast erudition,’ ‘his magic power over words,’ and that rare ability ‘to capture the spiritual essence of his subject.’ The Russian series, in particular ‘The Life and Death of Lenin’ and ‘The Rise and Fall of Stalin’, raised his reputation as biographer to enormous stature.

From atheist to icon
By Edward
He was born Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov and Lenin was only one of his many noms de guerre, but Lenin is the one that stuck, the name of the mummy idolized in Red Square. Robert Payne's "The Life and Death of Lenin", published in 1964, is a highly readable biography of the man who, having absorbed Marx, molded the philosophy to his own means. The government of the proletariat envisaged by Marx (I don't think he had mass executions in mind) became the dictatorship of Lenin, and his dictatorial nature became evident very early in his career. The book contains two striking photographs taken ten years apart. The portrait taken in 1887 depicts a clean-shaven clear-eyed schoolboy with a full head of hair. The group photo taken in 1897 shows a bald, bearded man facing the camera with a steely gaze. A mixture, I suspect, of nature taking its course and a case of concentrated re-invention. Lenin was still a youth when his beloved older brother was executed as a terrorist and when his father died (evidently of a stroke) in the teenager's presence. (Lenin said later: "I was sixteen when I gave up religion.") It was after these two events that Lenin became increasingly revolutionary, a stand confirmed by his reading of "Das Kapital" in 1888. Payne follows his revolutionary activities, his arrest, his exile to Siberia. The long period of Lenin's traveling outside Russia, consolidating his Communist leadership mainly through his writings, is made consistently engrossing. Even more fascinating is Lenin's struggle after the Revolution with Kerensky, who was determined not to become "the Marat of the Russian Revolution" (according to Payne, the slaughter of Nicholas II and his family was directly ordered by Lenin) and the obssession Lenin had of witnessing the proletariat domination of Europe. (He was particularly concerned about England, perhaps because Marx lived there so many years and is buried in London.) The irony of the final chapters is Lenin's relationship with Stalin. Payne writes: "Stalin was a monster. Yet it is important to observe that there could have been no Stalin without Lenin. Stalin was Lenin's child; and Lenin, who hated and despised and feared him, must bear sole responsibility for bringing Stalin to power." Lenin suffered several strokes in his early fifties and officially it was a stroke that killed him; but Payne states categorically that Stalin had him poisoned, citing the discrepencies in the stories of Lenin's last hours. After Lenin's death the mythology began immediately. I think Vladimir Ilyich, a hard-nosed unethereal type, would have been appalled at what happened to himself after his death, his body mummified, his spirit deified. Robert Payne's book neither mummifies nor deifies the man. Terrible and undeniably dynamic, here is the presence that altered the 20th Century and the world.

An Oldie But Goodie

Payne's biography of Lenin goes along way toward humanizing the architect of the 1918 Bolshevik Revolution in Russia. However, having been written during the Cold War years, his scholarship is somewhat limited to sources then available and takes a decidedly pro forma anti-Communist tone. Which I suppose was necessary to be published by a respectable mainstream publishing company in those days (1964).

Payne spends too much time with Lenin's early life, way more than I cared for anyway, but I would gather that this was done for the sake of completeness. Some interesting facts Payne's book revealed to me: Lenin's brother was hung by the authorities for being part of a anti-Czarist underground group (1905); Lenin was briefly held captive by bandits while driving around in the countryside during the 1920's; that he kept a Irish-French mistress for a time; and that the purges, show trials, executions, and deportations that followed the successful campaign over the counter-revolutionary White Armies and their European Allies was Lenin's idea, and not Stalin's. (Although Stalin carried out the program after gaining power and on a scale well beyond what Lenin had in mind.)

Payne's style of writing is easy to follow and replete with interesting personal information about Lenin, such as anecdotes about the items he kept on his desk at the Kremlin and their personal significance to him as well as the portraits on his walls. It all reminded me of how People Magazine might do a cover story about Lenin if they existed in those days.

A weakness in Payne's work is his failure to use footnotes to document the sources for these personal glimpses of Lenin. Official acts and formal documents that Lenin worked on were of course pretty easily available to historians and scholars, even in 1964, and so those aspects of Lenin's official duties in the government and CP are in less need of thorough documentation than are the personal things about him. But it would be nice to know where these personal glimpses of Lenin came from and how credible they are.

I would recommend this book while noting that there are newer biographies of Lenin that are far easier to obtain. I bought my copy at a garage sale for two dollars and, for me at least, it was well worth the price.

One of History's More Colorful Characters
By Solipso
The Goodness: I got a good look at the life and person of one of history's most charismatic individuals. It was entertaining to learn how Lenin's charisma moved him up through the ranks of the revolutionaries. I was pleased at the peeks that Payne gave me of Lenin's private moments. Also, Payne delivered many interesting anecdotes. Especially good were moments of Lenin's childhood, his exile in Siberia, his secret train ride through World War I Germany and his return to Russia, and the near-miss assassination attempt by the female revolutionary Fanya Kaplan.

The Blas: I guess Payne felt obliged as a professional biographer to make comments on various persons and events, especially about his main subject. Maybe he didn't believe his comments, but he just felt he had to say something. Certainly I didn't believe in everything he said. These comments were the dullest sections of the book.

The Badness: "The Life and Death of Lenin" was published almost half a century ago, and parts of it are outdated. Though I recommend it as a good read, I can't recommend that you read it without reading something more contemporary; for example Robert Service's biography, "Lenin." Otherwise you may get your facts wrong. What follows is my summary of three events that Payne inaccurately describes:

1. The assassination of German ambassador Mirbach: Payne says that Lenin ordered it. But Orlando Figes, in "A People's Tragedy" (published in 1996), gives a convincing account placing sole responsibility on the Left Socialist Revolutionaries. The Bolsheviks, including Lenin, had nothing to do with it.

2. The slaughter of Nicholas Romanov and his family: Payne does say that Lenin ordered the killings, but he gives some convoluted explanation for it. From "A People's Tragedy," I think the order was given for one simple reason: The White Army had surrounded Yekaterinburg, where the Romanovs were imprisoned. If the Whites were to perform a rescue, they would use the Romanovs as a rally flag, which might allow them to win the civil war and defeat Lenin's Red Army. Bye-bye revolution. The safest thing for Lenin to do was just to kill them.

3. Lenin's Death: I think Payne is stretching the facts when he says, "...if there is no evidence to permit us to point directly to the murderer, there is such an abundance of clues that it is no longer possible to believe he died a natural death.... Lenin's death...was brought about by Stalin." Orlando Figes's account of Lenin's death is much more sober. He says nothing about Stalin, or anyone else, murdering Lenin. I go along with the prima facie evidence of Lenin's autopsy: He died of a stroke.

Great simple survey of VP - Chris Gilmartin, OD
By Christopher Gilmartin
This book is a must have for any 1st/2nd yr OD student or ophthalmology resident. It is definitely a watered down version of the Norton text (The Psychophysical Measurement of Visual Function), but the most important concepts are thoroughly described in an easy-to-read format. If you want to understand visual perception to the "MS" level, go with Schwartz. If you want the "PhD" level - go with Norton. For Boards, I'd say the Schwartz text is more than sufficient. Norton is fine, but you'll be wasting a lot of time on concepts that are not tested on NBEO.

I am a 2nd year optometry student, and have only read chaps. 1-3 and 12 so far. It is very good. It explains concepts in a way that makes them very easy to comprehend. The writing overall is very good for such dry material. I would have given the book 5 stars if the figures were in color.

Kudos to Dr. Schwartz for writing such a swell text. This book takes complicated subjects and condenses them into an easy afternoon read. If you read this book before taking Part I of NBEO, you'll greatly increase your chances of passing. The text essentially summarizes a significant number of concepts NBEO writes questions about. Thanks Doc Schwartz!

Alien Human Spirit, by Arthur Burk

Deliverance was simple back in the 80s. Everything stemmed from bitterness so we forgave everyone and everything until our forgiver was plumb worn out.

Our naivet took a big hit when we discovered that it was not just bitterness but any sort of sin that could open the door to demons. Then it was sin, rebellion and iniquity, each of which had to be dealt with as a distinct class.

Today we look at sin, demons, curses, covenants, demonic devices, defilement on time, land, and our names, trauma bonds to time, portions of our spirit in the dimensions, etc. Yet after developing hundreds of techniques for endless facets of the above dynamics, the harsh reality is that some of the people we minister to do not get freedom even though they try as hard as anyone else to jump through the designated hoops.

This teaching album explores another kind of defilement; a volitional creature that is distinct from a demon. Many different practitioners have bumped up against these spirits and there are sundry theories and ideas out there about what these might be. I have created a grid to begin to understand the spiritual and physical dynamics of the problem.

This is a vintage Sapphire teaching. It is not the final word on the subject. Rather, it is an attempt to bring this issue out of the shadows into the living room so we can have a robust discussion in the Body of Christ about how to go forward.

I share my journey over the last ten years as I went from denial that this could be possible, to a grudging acknowledgement that it must be, to some level of competence in recognizing the symptoms of this other kind of spirit.

There are many practitioners who have bumped up against these creatures without quite having a frame of reference for what they are and how we deal with them. By sharing my observations and the stories of freedom for different people, it will give us a beginning place for enlarging our collective understanding of the dynamic.

What is particularly fascinating to me is that this breed of spirit is highly involved in physical malfunction. When symptomology does not fit the standard medical profile, and when medical treatment does not result in good health, and when healing prayers go nowhere, it is a clue that you might be dealing with this genre of spirit.

So jump in and explore. I guarantee that this will stretch your theology. I also guarantee that this is not the last word on the subject, only the first.

About the Author

Arthur Burk is a researcher whose war cry is that there has to be a better way. He is no friend of dysfunctional systems or beliefs. On the surface, you readily see the diversity of his background. He has traveled globally for half a century, is multi-lingual and has allowed the strengths and nuances of many cultures to inform and enrich his world view. He has been a pastor, home schooling parent, businessman, public speaker and writer, all of which served to give him a highly textured view of life.

While his experiences in life have given him a broad view of many topics, he is ultimately defined by his high view of God. Whether he is ministering to babies or consulting with businessmen, God is not far off. He sees the principles from the Word as applicable everywhere, and celebrates the power of God flowing from principles.

For decades now, people have said that they see things very differently for having been exposed to his world view.

Difficult Topic, Remarkable Research and Analysis
By Russ Fochler
Arthur Burk takes us with him through the "dots", milestones, research, ministry experiences, and reasoning that led to this teaching series. He discusses with great candor his theological concerns. And Arthur provides a "working approach" to diagnoses and "treatment" while acknowledging that much more needs to be understood and developed.

I honor and appreciate Arthur Burk's courage in publishing this teaching. Its clear that he is sharing this out of compassion, not out of any desire for notoriety. Personally, I'm not "settled" about this topic, but it seems to have relevance to me and to others.

Alien Human Spirits??!
By Carol A. Brown
Review of Arthur Burke’s AHS 1 and 2

This material is a trip, so prepare to have your theology and your methodology stretched. Buckle your seat belts because the learning curve goes straight up.

Really! Enjoy the ride because although you won’t understand everything you hear, that’s okay. You catch a little more truth each time you listen. I drive a car but I can’t name all the parts or fix it if something goes wrong---but I know people who can! This material is for the lay person as well as the professional and when you are stuck the gracious team at SLG can point you out of your dilemma. Thank you team!

I encourage you to give it a spin, take it on a test drive around the block and you just may be lighter and freer than you have ever been.

Would I recommend it? Certainly—to free spirits, those who can think outside the box, adventurous souls and those for whom “nothing else seems to work.”

Pays to have an open mind
By Teresa Bruce
This in not your everyday teaching for sure, but wow! I thought it was so weird at first and felt tremendous empathy for Arthur as he explained it. I have an incredible amount of respect for a man that will say something so controversial because it's the right thing to do. I tested this by dealing with an AHS on a person I had authority to help. I did it silently without them knowing because I knew they would want the help it they were open-minded enough to receive it and The Holy Spirit told me to go ahead. I was floored. We were just sitting there silently and within about 3 seconds this person says, ' I feel different. I don't know why, but all of a sudden I feel different and I can't even explain it.' HMMMMM And I noticed over the months that the things this person struggled with were not so pervasive. Interesting. Pays to have an open mind

History and Future: Using Historical Thinking to Imagine the Future, by David J. Staley

Perhaps the most important histiographic innovation of the twentieth century was the application of the historical method to wider and more expansive areas of the past. Where historians once defined the study of history strictly in terms of politics and the actions and decisions of Great Men, historians today are just as likely to inquire into a much wider domain of the past, from the lives of families and peasants, to more abstract realms such as the history of mentalities and emotions. Historians have applied their method to a wider variety of subjects; regardless of the topic, historians ask questions, seek evidence, draw inferences from that evidence, create representations, and subject these representations to the scrutiny of other historians. This book severs the historical method from the past altogether by applying that method to a domain outside of the past. The goal of this book is to apply history-as-method to the study of the future, a subject matter domain that most historians have traditionally and vigorously avoided. Historians have traditionally rejected the idea that we can use the study of history to think about the future. The book reexamines this long held belief, and argues that the historical method is an excellent way to think about and represent the future. At the same time, the book asserts that futurists should not view the future as a scientist might―aiming for predictions and certainties―but rather should view the future in the same way that an historian views the past.

Review
This book includes a fascinating discussion of human social dynamics, as they are shaped by our mental models, our biases and our imagination. The analysis of the patterning concepts and inferences we use to impose meaning on our past and future is especially interesting, especially in the context of scenario construction. (Timothy C. Mack, president, World Future Society)

History and Future is a very clearly written book that takes a counterintuitive idea, the history of the future, and shows that it can be not only intellectually respectable but a very useful endeavor. The book carries one along because of its lucidity, the way it relates and uses these ideas, and the manner in which it connects them to real-world examples and problems. The result is something that is entirely persuasive and quite illuminating. (Brian Fay, William Griffin Professor of Philosophy, Wesleyan University)

I liked Staley's articles better, more succinct. The book wandered a bit. Or maybe that was me. The concept though, is outrageously interesting. Using the past to imagine the future. COOL!

400 Things Cops Know: Street-Smart Lessons From a Veteran Patrolman, by Adam Plantinga

How does it feel to be in a high-speed car chase? What is it like to shoot someone? What do cops really think about the citizens they serve? Nearly everyone has wondered what it's like to be a police officer, but no civilian really understands what happens on the job.

400 Things Cops Know shows police work on the inside, from the viewpoint of the regular cop on the beat - a profession that can range from rewarding to bizarre to terrifying, all within the course of an eight-hour shift. Written by veteran police sergeant Adam Plantinga, 400 Things Cops Know brings the listener into life the way cops experience it - a life of danger, frustration, occasional triumph, and plenty of grindingly hard routine work. In a laconic, no-nonsense, dryly humorous style, Plantinga tells what he's learned from 13 years as a patrolman, from the everyday to the exotic - how to know at a glance when a suspect is carrying a weapon or is going to attack, how to kick a door down, how to drive in a car chase without recklessly endangering the public, why you should always carry cigarettes, even if you don't smoke (offering a smoke is the best way to lure a suicide to safety), and what to do if you find a severed limb (don't put it on ice - you need to keep it dry.)

400 Things Cops Know deglamorizes police work, showing the gritty, stressful, sometimes disgusting reality of life on patrol, from the possibility of infection - criminals don't always practice good hygiene - to the physical, psychological, and emotional toll of police work. Plantinga shows what cops experience of death, the legal system, violence, prostitution, drug use, the social causes and consequences of crime, alcoholism, and more. Sometimes heartbreaking and often hilarious, 400 Things Cops Know is an eye-opening revelation of what life on the beat is really all about.

Entertaining but also thought provoking
By JZS
I picked up "400 Things" after reading a Wall Street Journal article which mentioned that Lee Child and other crime writers were fans. Child called it "...a mix of hard-boiled autobiography and street-wise poetry." I don't know that I would go that far but I did enjoy the book.

Written by a thirteen year veteran patrol officer, the book is a collection of stories, observations, little known facts and personal musings told in an affable, straight forward style. I think the author is fairly representative of police officers, if more articulate than most. It may seem controversial in light of current events (This review is written on 11-29-14) but no attempt is made to whitewash police or vilify the citizenry. It merely provides perspective.

Divided into nineteen chapters with 11 to 31 "things cops know", this is a very easy read, with no section or tale running more than a few of pages. People frequently ask if a book contains foul language. Uh, of course this does- generally in the form of quotes not the author throwing it in randomly. I doubt that anyone really expects inner city police work to involve a lot of "Gee Whiz" and "Gosh Darn".

While there are stories and situations that are grim, depressing and even shocking, I did have several "laugh out loud" moments. For example:
"I once heard a coworker observe that my partner Ramon, a fine man but not especially fleet of foot, 'runs like Jed Clampett'."

This is a difficult review to write simply because there is so much to say about this book. It would definitely be a great book club selection. From Plantiga's thoughts on societal issues to the role of the media, I guarantee you will want to discuss it.

Although I would recommend this to everyone (but your favorite TV cop show will never be the same), I can't quite say that I love it. It was an easy book to set aside and return to days later. It was an impulse purchase for me and I do feel some pangs for the loss of a couple of other books I could have purchased for the price. Also, there were a few things that simply annoyed me. For some reason, paragraphs are lifted from the text and inserted into boxes with larger type as though you might have missed it the first time. This appears to be an attempt to make the book longer without adding any value or substance. And, at least in the kindle version, there are formatting problems in the last chapter where entire sentences are repeated.

Aside from these issues, I liked this book a lot and strongly recommend it.

The book pulls you through. Not a dead page ...
By Cornelius Plantinga, Jr.
The book pulls you through. Not a dead page in the whole thing. Chases, gunshots, investigations, take-downs, PR dilemmas, hookers, thugs and drugs--they're all here as you would expect, but so is much you wouldn't, including plenty of razor wit and blooming irony. This is the kind of book you want to carry through the house and call out to listeners: "Hey, listen to this!" Especially if you're the author's Dad. Way to go, Son!

400 Reasons to buy this book
By R. BULL
400 THINGS COPS KNOW by Adam Plantinga is another book from Quill Driver Books that will join Books, Crooks and Counselors by Leslie Budewitz and others in my personal reference library. Plantinga spent thirteen years as a patrol officer, which he boiled down to observations about life as a street cop, which are practical and blunt when they aren’t funny, heart-rending or chilling.

As a writer, my next manuscript with a police officer as character will be checked against this book to see if I have avoided the errors that pop us so frequently when the uninformed try to write about the uniformed. Do you know how Columbine changed the responses of police departments all over the United States? I do because I read this book and it is just the sort of detail that a cop might drop into conversation with a citizen. It is also the sort of detail that adds a sense of authenticity to a piece of writing.

About the importance of teamwork the author writes, “…if some citizen feels the need to challenge you on why it took seven officers to take the lone suspect into custody the answer is because eight weren’t available.” I remember a news conference in which a police spokesperson was asked why so many shots (Sorry, I don’t remember the exact number.) were fired by a group of officers at a gunman who first opened fire on a police unit. The spokesperson answered in effect — eventually you run out of bullets.

Why do cops toss their cups of coffee out the windows of their squad car when they get a high priority call? Can a car with a powerful engine outrun a cop car? (You may notice I ask questions but I don’t provide answers.) 400 THINGS COPS KNOW provides answers as well as giving hints about how an experienced officer might answer question since an experienced officer wrote the book. I highly recommend this book.

Review
"This work is a rather ambitious attempt to summarize not only the development of the burial place in ancient Egypt and its architecture, but also the complex religious significance of the tomb, the attendant rituals and ritual objects as well as funerary texts. Admittedly, there is a great deal to be said about each of these aspects of the burial rite in ancient Egypt and the author has essayed a survey that includes a good deal of significant information as well as observation." (Bryn Mawr Classical Review, 12 November 2011)

From the Back Cover
Ancient Egyptian tombs were not designed as places where the dead were buried and forgotten. They were the places where carefully preserved bodies were securely stored for eternity. The best of them were architecturally spectacular, richly decorated with carved and painted reliefs, and replete with a range of specialized grave-goods and statues. Their prominent visibility was a reminder of the ongoing relationship between the dead and the living.

These collections of extraordinary physical evidence, unique in the ancient world, tell us a great deal about how the Egyptians regarded the afterlife. Using all of the relevant data available, including architecture, artefacts and texts, this book explores the development of the tomb as a cultural phenomenon in Ancient Egypt. The author discusses tombs within the context of everyday life, particularly ongoing social and economic relationships, while stressing the importance of the tomb as an eternal expression of the self.

The Ancestor Syndrome: Transgenerational Psychotherapy and the Hidden Links in the Family Tree, by Anne Ancelin Schutzenberger

In The Ancestor Syndrome Anne Ancelin Schutzenberger explains and provides clinical examples of her unique psychogenealogical approach to psychotherapy. She shows how, as mere links in a chain of generations, we may have no choice in having the events and traumas experienced by our ancestors visited upon us in our own lifetime.
The book includes fascinating case studies and examples of 'genosociograms' (family trees) to illustrate how her clients have conquered seemingly irrational fears, psychological and even physical difficulties by discovering and understanding the parallels between their own life and the lives of their forebears. The theory of 'invisible loyalty' owed to previous generations, which may make us unwittingly re-enact their life events, is discussed in the light of ongoing research into transgenerational therapy.
Anne Ancelin Schutzenberger draws on over 20 years of experience as a therapist and analyst and is a well-respected authority, particularly in the field of Group Therapy and Psychodrama. First published as Aie, mes Aieux this fascinating insight into a unique style of clinical work has already sold over 32,000 copies in France and will appeal to anyone working in the psychotherapy profession.

Maple Leaf Against the Axis, by David J. Bercuson

Maple Leaf Against the Axis is a compelling recounting of the Second World War and the Canadians who fought it. Here, in all its passion and drama, is the story of how the Canadian army, navy and air force fought in battles ranging from Hong Kong to the Rhine River crossing. David Bercuson, one of Canada's preeminent military historians, covers the war on the ground, the naval war in the North Atlantic and elsewhere, and the air war-both the bomber offensive and the story of those Canadians who flew everything from Canso reconnaissance aircraft in the Indian Ocean to Typhoon fighter bombers with the Second Tactical Air Force in Europe. And he does it through recounting the stories of the men and women who were there and played a significant role in the Allied victory.

A good survey of Canada's contribution
By Craig MACKINNON
Canada's contribution to the Allied war effort in WWII is often overlooked, especially when considering army and air campaigns. Indeed, a good many Canadians served in the British military instead of the Canadian (especially the RAF), and they get lost in the shuffle. Contrasted against that, however, is the fact that the Canadian army had a D-Day beach to itself (Juno), and this army played a major role in the continental campaign that followed (just ask the Dutch and Belgians), not to mention the previous battles in Italy. This book helps to fill the gap in nicely, if in less detail than I would have liked. It is obvious that Bercusen has studied his material. The addition of some photos was a nice touch. Recommended for anyone with an interest in Canada's contribution in the "last great war." I look forward to reading his offering on Canada's effort in the Korean War (Blood on the Hills).

Canada Takes on the Axis
By Roger Kennedy
A very readable and enjoyable book on Canada's participation in WW2. The author wastes no time about domestic and home front issues, believing rightly, these have been covered extensively elsewhere. In general the work is critical of the command structure and organization that sent Canadian forces to war.

The Canadian Navy for the first half of the battle of the Atlantic was woefully unprepared to deal with U-Boats and convoy escourting. Short sightediness and desperation sent these ill-eqipped RCN vessels on patrol in the Atlantic, where they could barely defend the convoys entrusted to them. Over time the RCN gained expereince, training, and better gear, but it was a difficult process with the U-boats scoring hits in Canadian home waters right up to the end of the war.

The RCAF enters the conflict only marginally better off than the RCN. Pilots are trained and many RCAF personel end up flying directly in the RAF, thereby depriving many nascent RCAF sqadrons of their expertise and numbers. Over time the Canadian squadrons become adept in their place within Bomber Command, and their contrinution to the Allied bombing effort while perhaps controversial, became no less significant.

The chapters dealing with the Canadian army must wait until later in the book as these forces do not become engaged until late 1943. In general the author is highly critical of the sluggish command structure which tends to insist on set piece battles with little room for initative. In Italy the Canadian 5th armored division is prevented from exploiting what could have become a major breakthrough because of sluggish command control.

Canadian higher command suffers from the British tendency of fighting in very set-piece fashion. This often prevents taking advantage of the very good fighting qualities of the Canadian infantry who create tactical opportunities that are often sqaundered by their commanders.

In all a very readable work that is often highly critical of allied strategy and tactics. While seeing Canadian short-commings the author points out how faulty assumptions by US commanders before D-Day would see raw US infantry trying to over-come strong German beach defenses with little or no armor support. This would cost them dearly at Omaha. A different look indeed on how the US manages the war in a somewhat heavy-handed fashion. Montgomery's plodding advance before the Falise encirclement allows additional German forces to escape the pocket, and again prevents Canadian breakthrough opportunities.

Seen in the context of the over all Allied effort Canada's contribution appears significant. The constant concern of Canadian politicians is that their forces maintain independence of command, and not simple incorporation as just another commonwealth element in the British war effort. For the most part Canada succeeds in these goals, and the nation fields over five large divisions to play its part in the European theater of operations.

This book provides not only a sound description of Canada's efforts in WW2, but also a good look at the conflict as a whole. The difficulties of coalition warfare come to the fore. When a middle sized nation is part of two larger nations it risks being taken over in its efforts by both senior partners. This was very much Canada's problem, and this book shows how difficult it can be for a smaller nation in such alliances. Readers should find this book worthwhile in the different perspective and good over all historical context it provides of WW2.

Patriotic yet pragmatic
By I. C. Rogers
Bercuson draws a fine line between being overly patriotic about the actions of Canadian forces during the Second World War and giving a realistic and factual overview of the actions of the Army, Navy, Air Force and political forces behind them. Bercuson certainly has a way with words; as a former student of his to this I can attest. Although not a piece to be looked upon for research material in an upper level history course, it offers young history students and anyone interested in the topic a detailed, provocative perspective of the somewhat forgotten history of Canada during WW2.
