Awesome reference tool

This is such a wonderful little book. I hadn't read the Constitution since school. I had forgotten what a simple yet powerful document it is...and how great to be able to stick it in my purse! It's also amazing to see how the recognition as citizens and acknowledgement of the rights of African-Americans changed so drastically within the context of the Constitution. It's incredible how far we've come from where we were in this country...and hopefully continuing to grow. This little book is a gem that offers incredible perspective on our country as it relates to race.

Met my needs

I purchased this book because I recently moved to a street named "Mondrian Way". I am an amateur decorator and many articles I read would reference a "Mondrian-like" appearance or "reminscent of Mondrian". I was curious about "Mondrian" and this book not only has satisfied my curiousity about the person, but also about his art and the motivation behind it. I would recommend this book to anyone with a similar interest.

For such a short (and physically small) book, it packs a lot of information and wonderful photographs of the various paintings into a small space. Excellent chronology for those who are just beginning their journey into art history .and the important artists who shaped the essence of art in the Western World

Fantastic

Women need to get this one. I've read every "how to catch a man" book out there and this is the only one you'll ever need (well, other than DrPhils Love Smart, which is only second to Margaret Kent. Louis and Copeland's "How to Succeed With Men",don't buy that one, it's absolute garbage. How To Marry the Man Of Your Choice rates high because it is psychological.It takes you into the minds of men, their behavior and the nitty gritty of what they expect, what makes them tick, and most importantly why they marry. "The Rules" is all about behavior guidelines. If you don't know the psychological workings of men, you won't be having much success. All the other dating self help books are philosophical, or full of junk science,and they never work. Margaret Kents book rates high for me because it comes with a master plan-which is what single women need, not another book on their plight. Two thumbs up.

A heroic story, beautifully told

I remember my first sight of this book, written by Yvonne Payne, who writes a very good blog. I had visited it and saw the book. It was worth a second look:

You see a girl, her long, sun-sparked hair flowing down her back, gazing into the distance. She wears a simple, long white tunic. The sunlight, the blue sky and the rocks and hills before her catch your attention and you almost overlook the shadowy figures in the upper register of the cover, like the ghosts of long-ago strife, somehow discordant beside the sun and the peace and the beautiful girl.

But it is not. The book tells the story of Rodanthe, the daughter of the local priest in the village of Kritsa during the first part of the nineteenth century, when Greece lay under Ottoman rule. Given the name Kritsotopoula – ‘Girl of Kritsa’ – after her death, Rodanthe fought beside her fellow Cretans and ultimately died for the cause.

You can see the monument and read of her exploits if you visit Crete.

…or you can read this lyrically written book that tells her story. Yvonne Payne has a wonderful way with words, from her description of Rodanthe’s emotions when she cuts her beautiful hair to aid in her disguise through to the fast-moving, vivid scenes of battle, skillfully weaving action, noise, pain and emotion together in a beautiful whole.

I agree with another reviewer who said that it would be nice to have a glossary of Greek and Turkish terms if (when!) this book goes into another edition.

A Fascinating Footnote of Cretan History

This is a very good read. "Kritsotopoula" paints a vivid picture of a little known period of Cretan history. The reader is thrown straight into the action, with much of the story told in flashback. Unusually for a first-time author, this does not confuse but adds to the interest. Characters are well defined and well differentiated and, within a very short time, the reader becomes engrossed in their lives. From about page two, we want to know what has happened to bring the heroine to this point and what will happen to her in the future.

A couple of minor niggles are not enough to detract from the five-star rating, but are worth mentioning. Although historically accurate, I feel that the title was ill-advised. It doesn't slip off the tongue readily, which could cause problems with marketing. Secondly, on occasions, the language of some of the characters doesn't ring quite true, as if it is the author speaking rather than Cretan villagers. I did not, however, find this interrupted the flow of the story to a great extent. Finally, if the book reaches a second edition (which I hope), a brief glossary of some of the Greek and Turkish terms would be helpful.

In spite of these quibbles, I can thoroughly recommend this book both as an exciting story and for its historical interest. Historical fiction at its best.

My Review of “Kritsotopoula” by Yvonne Payne.
The fearless fighting spirit of Cretans against foreign oppression is legendary. We only have to look at the fear resistance groups instilled in the Germans in WWII. In the first half of the 19th century, when this story is told, Crete was still under Ottoman domination and revolutionary bands hiding out in the mountains wreaked havoc on Turkish authority. In “Kritsotopoula”, author Yvonne Payne tells the story of the brief but heroic life of a young girl – Rodanthe – whose innocence is shattered by the brutality taking place in and around her village, Kritsa. Filling in the gaps of what is known about Rodanthe’s short life, she weaves a credible story of her life as a young girl, her kidnapping and intended marriage to a Turk, and her escape to the harsh and often inhospitable mountains of Crete’s Lassithi Province.
The women of Crete played an important role in standing side-by-side with their menfolk in the many uprisings but in Rodanthe’s case, she shed her feminine attire to dress and fight like a man. When the realization hits home that their Russian allies have abandoned them, the revolutionaries are faced with the inevitable. Determined to put down the revolt and aided by the Egyptian troops of Mehmet Ali, Viceroy of Egypt, the Turks set out to take their revenge. To the battle-cry of “Freedom or Death” Rodanthe, known to her men as “the beardless one”, makes one last stand against the oppressors, ultimately losing her life.
Poignantly told, the author gives us a glimpse into Rodanthe’s thoughts. The writing style flows and I found myself drawn into Rodanthe’s cause. From a personal point of view, I would like to have seen more from the Turkish perspective, but that aside,, "Kritsotopoula" was an enjoyable read and for anyone interested in this turbulent period of Cretan history I highly recommend it.

R.L. Stine Books Are Always a Hit!

My 12 year old son has a collection of R.L. Stine's books in his room. So far he has a large number of the Goosebumps, Goosebump Horrorlands, some others I can't think of lol, and is now starting to read R.L. Stine's Fear Street books. I read these books as a kid and now I'm buying them for my kids!

If you're looking for a book of terrifying horror, this is the book!

This series of books is about ordinary children going into great, terrifying adventures. These children witness scary things! The horror, the evil, this is madness I tell you. If you need some terror and horror, this is the book.

I am an expert at books. I have 48 books at my house and I'm only eight. Every day in my class if I get a star, I get a new book. I'm in second grade and am reading at a level Q. I'm telling you that I have never ready a book scarier than this. The excitment in these books is awesome. It's the best book I've ever read. I'm telling you, this is the bomb!

In one book called There's a Warewolf in my Room, the character got chased by a warewolf. I loved it! The boy got bit and he transformed into a warewolf. It was cool and awesome at the same time. Then the boy bit his dad! Now he's a warewolf too. The three warewolfs went to the dog show, and ate all the dogs. Did they eat the people too? You'll have to find out!

If you're looking for a book of terrifying horror, this is the book. You should check it out. I can't believe the warewolf saves a kid's life in the end. Also, a big glob of bubblegum eats cars, people, and houses. I promise you this will scare you to death! If you like scary, creepy things that are nasty, get Goosebumps. It is available at your local stores, Amazon.com, and Barnes and Noble.

In the seventh and final chapter of the Chiller House series, Andy, Sam, Jessica, Meg, Marco, and Ray find their selves trapped inside Horrorland at night. Jonathan Chiller had given all of the kids a free gift at his store and now it is time for them to pay. The kids must play a game of cat and mouse. There are six red boxes hidden all over the theme park. Inside each box is a green horror that will take them home, or so they thought. Chiller has other plans for them, he is hunting them with a crossbow. Will the kids survive Horrorland?

All the kids from the six previous novels return for the latest installment in the Goosebumps Horror land series. I liked that R.L. Stine gave the villain a back-story at the beginning of the book, but it made the character not scary, but silly. Teamwork is a big theme throughout the book, as the kids band together to escape the clutches of Chiller. Overall, it was a fun read, and an excellent edition to the series.

We're All Full of It, But It's Not Fatal

Once you begin reading this book, DO NOT STOP.

This book will rip your insides into tiny shreds and put them back together as you continue reading. (I had real-life tummy-flutters as I read this, and a couple of weepy moments.) If you stop reading before the surgeon has stitched you back together, you’re going to be uncomfortable.

Your very foundations will be rocked. But then you can rebuild with something even more solid; something that will serve you under ALL circumstances BECAUSE there are no hard and fast rules. I know... crazy.

At last, here’s someone who’s asking you to figure out your own life FOR YOURSELF. You’re your own expert. He’s not here to give you answers, but to ask the right questions... and of course, to call you on your BS. You’ll be squirming in your pants.

The book’s ideas are brutally revealing. Once these ideas are pointed out to you, you cannot “un-see” them; luckily, they will haunt you so that you can self-correct and move forward with your life.

Oh, and every question is a trick-question. You’ll love it!

HOLY HECK! This book BLEW ME AWAY!

Derek is a friggin' genius.

This book will change the way you look at yourself, others, and basically the entire world.

I feel like most self-help books are fairly repetitive, and don't bring very many new ideas to the table.

Not so with this book. I can honestly say that I GASPED (out loud) on multiple occasions, simply because Derek's ideas make SO MUCH SENSE. Seriously, this dude is operating on a whole new plane of thinking.

Every human being who gives a crap about their life should buy this book. Right now. I don't care how broke you are. Fork over the few dollars it costs. You will NOT regret it. This book will change your life, no doubt about it.

I've read A LOT of self-help books (and I'm actually a self-help author myself) but I can honestly say that this is the BEST, most GROUNDBREAKING, absolutely AWE-INSPIRING book I've ever read.

E-V-E-R!

Don't hesitate. Do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of this book. I can't recommend it highly enough.

How to Think for Yourself

Most self-help books are content to give you encouraging platitudes while attempting to teach you WHAT to think. And what they teach may not actually be applicable to every given situation. Sometimes they explain why they're teaching you this, but most often they just ask you to "believe" in what they have to say.

This book is different.

"Break Through Your BS" actually teaches you HOW to think for yourself, and how to see if you're really making the best possible decisions for yourself in that given moment, taking context into account. It's revolutionary in that regard. I'm a pretty prolific reader, but I often found myself pausing as I read this to give his points more thought and consideration.

The points are also easy to remember since they're often presented in surprising and funny ways, so you can remember to apply it in the real world to actually change your life instead of just reading something and feeling like you're learning, only to never actually do anything with it. And smart and consistent application is what matters most, as that's where the magic lies. This book has that magic in spades, provided you add the secret ingredient...your willingness to read and apply the concepts for yourself. =)
