A RECOMMENDATION WITH RESERVATIONS

I'm going to end up recommending this book with one major and two minor reservations. If you can get past the reservations (which I will explain), I believe there is something here that might make a difference in your life and mine. You'll notice that the majority of reviews give the book 5 stars, but a significant minority give it 1 star. I'm guessing that the wide disparity of reactions is based on how surmountable or insurmountable the reservations were to each reviewer. My purpose is to help you decide whether for you it would be worthwhile shelling out the $18-$25 price of the book

Here's the major reservation: in Calvinism, you could tell who was saved and going to heaven by how successful and prosperous they were. In Social Darwinism, successful people were evidence of survival of the fittest. In the Power of Intention, people create the lives they want based on being "aligned with Intention". The implication is that if they are poor, diseased, homeless, or victimized, they are not aligned with Intention. They may not be sinners (Calvinism) or unfit (Social Darwinism), but they are unenlightened and somehow responsible for their unhappy fate. I wonder what advice Dyer would have had for the victims of the recent tsunami.

If Dyer's theories are correct and universal, should we be translating his book and dropping it into distressed areas like Darfur in the Sudan or perhaps in the Sunni triangle? Personal responsibility is a powerful and often overlooked factor in the human condition, but Dyer seems oblivious to the possibility that there might be other factors at work, as well. His five words "I want to feel good" would be a tough sell for the sole survivor of a family that has just been murdered.

The first minor reservation is, pardon the big word, epistomological: how does Dyer know what he says he knows? For example, how does he know that there are precisely seven "Faces of Intention"? Why not six or eight or ten? Is he the Chosen Receiver of Spiritual Truth with his own private Mount Sinai, or more likely, is he simply inventing a systematic break-down of Intention or figuring out what Intention should include? The system and the seven faces are plausible and useful, but where and how did he get them?

The second minor reservation is that Dyer does not really share with us how alignment with Intention has made a difference in his life. For example, how did it help him overcome addiction to cocaine or alcohol? How did it help make his second marriage better than his first? These stories would help him connect his theories with his life and help the reader do the same.

All that said, I still think Dyer is onto something. I have a vague awareness of the power of Intention in my own life, and after reading the book, I now intend to pursue it in a conscious way and see what turns up. The possible benefits of this experiment far exceed any conceivable costs. And this is why I end up recommending the book to you, IF you can get past the reservations.

The book provides a background to the study, exploring the role of caste and its enduring influence on social relations in all aspects of life. The book also contains a critical account of the current experiences of Dalit students and faculty in one elite university setting – the University of Shah Jahan (pseudonym). Drawing on a set of in-depth semi-structured interviews, the empirical study that is at the centre of this book explores the perceptions of staff and students in relation to the Quota policy and their experiences of living, working and studying in this elite setting. The data chapters are organised in such a way as to first explore the faculty views. The experiences of students are then examined with a focus on the way in which their caste is still an everyday part of how they are sometimes ‘othered’. Also, a focus on female Dalit experiences attempts to capture the interconnecting aspects of abject discrimination in their university life. Faces of Discrimination in Higher Education in India explores:

• critical exploration of the Quota System policy and related social justice issues;
• faculty voices: Quota, caste and discrimination;
• students’ perceptions and experiences of the Quota policy;
• being a ‘female Dalit’ student;

Thomas Keane has take on a subject that disturbs many of us - the loss of face to face communication, the hours of time consumption noted in public places where people are more attached to their smartphones with social media, texting, selfies, or other distractions form the real world. Not only is it rude when someone in your group steps mentally away to the slavery of their smartphone,, but it is undermining the old tradition of simply enjoying eye contact conversation over coffee or in a park or in the hallway of buildings, etc.

As Thomas states in his introduction: `In this day and age, having a mobile phone - or more specifically, a smartphone - is almost an indispensable part of our everyday lives. We say "almost" because while it is true that one can go about the day without a mobile phone, the fact remains that doing so is not an easy thing to do. This is because smartphones have ceased to become mere devices with which to call or text people; nowadays, they have achieved a level of sophistication that makes them the de facto device not only to communicate with other people, but also to check email, log in for work, do online banking, shop for goods, check your exact location, review services, and of course, record events either through photos or videos. The multi-functionality of the ordinary smartphone , not to mention its extreme portability, has made it the go-to device for many. In fact, many people can now do more things with this nifty gadget even without an actual desktop computer or even a laptop. So given all these , it is hardly surprising that not a few people have developed a sense of attachment to their smartphones, some more than others.' Strong words but oh so true!

A Prevalent Addiction

Smartphone addiction is really prevalent. You can hardly go anywhere where someone is not paying more attention to their phone that the people around them. The truth is that smartphone addiction is very isolating all while you think you are being more social. I see people at my grocery store who are more concerned with their phone than the fact that they are blocking the way for others trying to shop. If this is you then this book may help you.

Thomas Keane gives tips on other things you could be doing instead of being continually on your phone. You may rediscover the pleasures of a walk out in nature or the intellectual pleasure of reading a good book. Either way this book gives you something to think about. This is a really short book that has a few great ideas.

The part of the History of Philosophy of which the present volume treats I attempted to present in an extended work, the first division of which appeared thirty-three years ago, and was separated from the last division by a space of twenty years. I may be permitted to say something respecting the relation in which the present, probably my last published work, stands to that earlier, which was my first. That it is a very different one, part by part, every one will readily understand, who considers that the first division of the larger work was written when its author had reached his fourth climacteric year, the last division, when he had reached the seventh, and that now, when he is approaching the ninth, he must naturally find the first to be more remote and foreign than the last.

About the Author
Wendy R. Uhlmann, MS, CGC is the genetic counselor/clinic coordinator of the Medical Genetics Clinic at the University of Michigan. She is a Clinical Instructor in the Department of Human Genetics and an executive faculty member of the genetic counseling training program.

Comprehensive

As a graduating genetic counseling student, I have found this book to be highly valuable. It covers much of the practical information needed for genetic counseling, from how to run a session to psychosocial issues. It does not cover genetics, and is not meant to be that kind of text. This book is meant to be used in conjunction with genetic counseling classes and clinical training experience.
