Intimate Portrait of a Driven Genius

Ever since I saw Gene Kelly co-starring with Judy Garland in "The Pirate", "Summer Stock", and "For Me and My Gal", I have always considered him to be my favorite of Garland's leading men. However, since my childhood introduction to Gene Kelly, I have come to see him as much more than Judy's co-star-- and this book tells me why. I had never known before that he directed "Singin' in the Rain" and "On the Town." Who knew that his talent off camera matched the talent on screen? Clive Hirschhorn's biography reveals a highly intelligent man who is quite different from what one would expect when one looks at the characters he portrays on screen. Gene was a highly private man who, although he had a large social circle, remained a bit apart from the crowd. Although tempermental and brutally demanding of perfection from himself and others, he could also be surprisingly gentle and funny. He had an interest in philosophy, politics, music, and literature. The knowledge he had in these areas certainly contributed to the artistry he put toward his choreography and direction. This book gives insight into Gene Kelly not through speculation or gossip but through interviews with his friends, co-workers, and, most importantly, the man himself. The book was written twenty years before Gene's death and thus is not a complete portrait of his life. However, this works to the book's advantage since the author was able to interview Gene himself. The book is funny, inspiring, and tragic all at once. It broke my heart to read of the downward spiral of Gene's career as the golden age of Hollywood died. But, Gene's optimism and resilience were impressive to read about. He is certainly an example for all, embodying all-American attributes including ingenuity, persistence, ambition, and challenging the accepted norm. The book reads like a page-turner, and, by the end, the reader feels that he/she was one of Gene's regular guests at the informal Saturday night parties for which he was so famous. I'd highly recommend this biography for Gene Kelly fans, fans of musicals, or simply fans of a good read!

Gene Kelly: The Lone Hoofer

This is definitely a great reading, which ensambles many of the diverse facets of dancer, choreographer and movie-star Gene Kelly, a respectful but surprisingly objective (due to the inclusion of numerous interviews and behind-the scenes details) biography that displays alternatively lights and shadows over this pioneer dancer/director, a recount which is initiated in his childhood in a poor neighbourhood from Pittsburgh (As he said himself: 'Astaire represents the aristocracy when he dances - I represent the proletariat!'), then his fulminant breakthrough in "Pal Joey" and his early fame in Hollywood, his immensurable talents and his involvement with a talented troupe of artists, his marriages to Betsy Blair and Jeannie Coyne, his perfectionist tendencies, the disappointments that would affect his career in the decline of the musical genre, the HUAC confrontation during the blacklist, the joy and the disillusionment, the humanity of a star behind the Hollywood's fa�ade. Highly recommended.

A great recollection of Gene Kelly's life

A great recollection of Gene Kelly's life. I would agree with other reviewers that this the best bio of this multi-talented star. I was captivated by Hirschhorn's interviews with people who grew up with Kelly in Pittsburgh, hard to believe that they didn't know he was a dancer, he seemed to want to be recognized more as an athlete, not uncommon for young men. I was also surprised that he didn't leave Pittsburgh until he was nearly 30 years old, and it was his second trip to NY to give Broadway a shot. Very interesting that he could well have returned to Pittsburgh if Pal Joey didn't give him exposure and lead to the Hollywood contract, which is a great story in its own right, MGM wanted him, and Louis Mayer promised he would NOT be required to take a screen test. When he was told he WOULD have to take the screen test, Kelly got his "Irish" up and cursed Mayer. Kelly walked away from Mayer's offer. It was funny that Mayer's son in law, David Selznick, did sign Kelly thereafter and yes, he was loaned to MGM where he made his bones and the best musicals ever. I absolutely enjoyed this story of a blue collar kid working with his family to endure the depression and became an American Legend.

Fascinating book!! I want to clarify for anyone confused by the name that this is written for adults, not children. The Chris Bledsoe abduction stories (there are more than one) are a highlight. The story about the CIA and Navy channeling an alien was another personal fav. Chapter 7 has a bunch of really interesting celebrity abduction stories too. Recommended to all.

An Extreamely Interesting book on The UFO & ET Phenomena

I don`t know what book "princess lucy " was reading when she wrote the review for this book , also the ONLY book review she has ever written , but she couldn`t be more wrong. Perhaps she`s confused , regardless, I found this book to be extreamely interesting , engaging and factual on many the most important UFO & ET related cases that have happened in the last 50 yrs or so . This book touches on many areas of the phenomena and is a great read ! Grant is an internationally known lecturer & researcher of the UFO & ET subject and an expert in the feild. Highly recommended !

A pure delight for anyone into bdsm books. The book is very riveting and arousing. Once one picks it up, one is not able to put it down - reading it from beginning to end at one go. Like all of Allan Aldiss' book, the book is very well written. What I enjoy above all is the intricate details, intricate careful details which makes the scenes all the more arousing. It is a very arousing read. A must have for anyone into bdsm books.

Maia Kotrosits challenges the contemporary notion of "early Christian literature," showing that a number of texts usually so described—New Testament writings including Hebrews, Acts, the Gospel of John, Colossians, and 1 Peter, as well as the letters of Ignatius, the Gospel of Truth, and the Secret Revelation of John—are "not particularly interested" in a distinctive Christian identity or self-definition. Rather, by appealing to the categories of trauma studies and diaspora theory and giving careful attention to the dynamics within each of these texts, she shows that this sample of writings offers complex reckonings with chaotic diasporic conditions and the transgenerational trauma of colonial violence. The heart of her study is an inquiry into the significance contemporary readers invest in ancient writings as expressions of a coherent identity, asking, "What do we need and want out of history?" Kotrosits interacts with important recent work on identity and sociality in the Roman world and on the dynamics of desire in contemporary biblical scholarship as well. At last, she argues that the writings discussed made possible the rise of Christianity by effecting a "forgetfulness" of imperial trauma—and questions the affective dimensions of contemporary empire-critical scholarship.

Miranda Aldhouse Green is Professor of Archaeology at University of Wales College, Newport. Her main research interests are in the material culture of ritual and religion in the European Iron Age and western Roman provinces. Her previous publications include Symbol and Image in Celtic Religious Art , Exploring the World of the Druids, and Dying for the Gods.

More useful to the art historian than the modern Celtophile

This is a beautiful volume that is well illustrated. However the topic of how iron age people (especially the Celts) used artwork is no revelation to those of us who have kept current in modern Celt studies. That art objects for the Celts had multiple uses and lived multiple lives (the main thesis to this text) is nothing particularly new. Some of us are in touch with archeologists of active Celtic sites and when archeologists discover almost all of the bronze votive horses found have one broken leg and it is broken in a similar way you get the idea that this was a manipulation done with a purpose.
Many people who study the ancient Celts may find much in this book redundant. All the same a good book.

Self Awareness in a Bottle: Better than any religion or expensive Psychotherapy

For those on their maiden voyage into the complex realm of self-definition and self-awareness, there is no better companion written than this book by Dr. David Viscott. "The Language of Feelings," which is in reality, a primer of applied Freudian psychology, is short, sweet, to the point, and most importantly, is everywhere correct.

Viscott is a giant among the many "quick cure," "psycho-babble," and "feel good" pygmies and shysters. He provides what others of that ilk can only dream of: the true skinny about how we relate to ourselves through our feelings.

Without fanfare, ideologies or religion and without elaborate promises of magic cures, he guides us through each feeling, one-by-one: "hurt and loss," "anxiety," "anger," "guilt," "depression," and "getting out of emotional debt," telling us what to expect, what needs they serve, how they interact with our natural defenses and most of all how they go together to make us whole. And everything he says "rings true," because his descriptions -- both in principle and in practice -- are exactly how we do in fact relate to our feelings.

I advise reading "The Language of Feelings" to anyone who has considered religion, expensive psycho-therapy, expensive awareness training, mindless ideologies, or psycho-trophic drugs.

Viscott's considerable psychiatric experience has been boiled down to the "bare bone essentials." In my library of more than 10, 000 books there is none more valuable than this one. No amount of money spent on psychotherapy can match the content of this book.

Without the contents of this book providing the first steps, the journey into self-awareness, which is difficult even under normal circumstances, is likely to be even more difficult.

The book is a superstar among good books. It is clear, no nonsense, and correct. Ten Stars!

Viscott is the best

David Viscott is one of two key leaders in the psychology space who changed my life. His explanations of how feelings work and how to get up to date with our emotions is excellent. I highly recommend this book - his tape "How To Be Your Own Therapist" is life changing - simple and easy to do steps - at the heart of it - talk about your feelings as they happen because when you don't they get stored as other things. He also wrote a book sold here called "The Viscott Method" that takes you through the exact process he used working with clients - it is excellent and people in the field of psychology and psychiatry should use this as a training guide.

Supplement for you Milady book, more like a summary

I bought this as a supplement to my Milady book that I got in Cosmetology School and it is mostly a quick reference guide to the mentioned services. You get pretty much the same photos and techniques in the book in the detailed sections, in this book they are just nicely organized and presented for you.

This item has very little information pertaining to chemical processing and the chemistry involved. This is a beginners outline there is very little about complementary colors.
